- Over Xmas, I finally got around to reading The War of the Worlds. One of those books you 'know' (the films, the concept albums...) but one that is just so much richer in its original text. The setting is familiar, parochial even, the language very much of its time, but the vision is immense... 1/2
- The description of war is familiar to anyone with a passing knowledge of the first world war, but Wells was writing 15 years before that started. It is brilliantly brutal and desolate, not least in how it explores the humans themselves - our weaknesses, fortitude and hubris. Felt very timely. 2/2
- Oh, and that cover is amazing. ##amreading #writersdayoff
- "A riveting political thriller... I loved the intrigue and machinations in smoke filled rooms, fuelled by acrid coffee. But it’s also timeless and humane in the way it tracks how idealism collides with politics." The Whirligig is out now. www.amazon.co.uk/dp/1919175008

- Thought from the North Atlantic, after a week in the Azores: the far right candidate in next year's Portugese presidential election has posters everywhere (some comically defaced) and it's clear that today's Nazis are absurdly well-funded, the world over.

- This chart is astonishing and yet so unsurprising. I always ask friends and family caught up in this delirium 'what has changed?' and the answer isn't this.
- Reposted by Adrian HarveyNigel Farage on GB News the other day said: “We have a Mayor of London who is happy to celebrate every other religious festival around the world, but just not Christmas.” One of his more brazen lies. - Memory-holing is not new, exhibit 3271. Of course, tech makes it (much) easier these days to stand up the lie, but we've always been bad at knowing things.
- The rules, as set out by Douglas Adams. 1 everything that’s in the world when you’re born is normal; 2 anything that gets invented before you turn 30 is exciting and with any luck you can make a career out of it; 3 anything that gets invented after that is the beginning of the end of civilisation

- A gripping story of politics and power, of loyalty and betrayal, and of the good intentions that pave the road to hell. "The mood is unmistakably tense —smoke-hazed rooms, uneasy political currents, and a constant sense that something is shifting just out of sight."
- My novel, The Whirligig, is out on Thursday (the 50th anniversary of Franco's death). In part, it explores what happens when 'good' people turn against vulnerable minorities for votes. Feels kind of relevant...

- Reposted by Adrian HarveyIt’s fascinating comparing the front page coverage of the Huntingdon train attack (below) with how the British press treated another case 30 years ago. I’m referring to the 1995 Netto supermarket attack in Birmingham in which a man stabbed 10 people, killing one of them.
