Over Xmas, I finally got around to reading The War of the Worlds. One of those books you 'know' (the films, the concept albums...) but one that is just so much richer in its original text. The setting is familiar, parochial even, the language very much of its time, but the vision is immense... 1/2
The description of war is familiar to anyone with a passing knowledge of the first world war, but Wells was writing 15 years before that started. It is brilliantly brutal and desolate, not least in how it explores the humans themselves - our weaknesses, fortitude and hubris. Felt very timely. 2/2
