As events in America are now showing, democracies are only as strong as their weakest point. And right now, the weakest point in our own democracy is the continued rise of one Nigel Farage

‘Homes may have to be abandoned’: how the #climatecrisis has reshaped Britain’s flood risk
- As rivers swell and homes are cut off, scientists say UK winter rainfall is already 20 years ahead of predictions

"We should not fool ourselves or allow others that privilege. Keir Starmer’s dishonesty [about Brexit] is only prolonging the profound sense of grief and betrayal that millions of us have suffered since that referendum. He has to go."
Absolutely. Agree with everything written about Brexit here.
These include rule exemptions for polluters, cutting the agency’s research and development office and trying to change the legal finding underpinning virtually all US climate regulations. Actions affect a lot of areas…
Great piece illustrating how Trump has reshaped the so called Environmental protection agency (EPA) such that it is now driving harms to the environment and our health with impacts that will be felt across the world. A quick 🧵🧪 #HealthPolicy#climatechange
May as well dive right in.
Did you know that dogs in ancient Mesopotamia also refused to drop the ball?
According to a Sumerian proverb, “The dog understands ‘Take it!’ It does not understand ‘Put it down!’”

Two things to learn from this.
1. The rightwing newspapers are lobby groups whose purpose is to advance the class interest of their proprietors.
2. Lobbyists for the rich and powerful lose their jobs if they are not prepared to lie.

Sadly suppressing such a devastating report doesn’t make the risks go away - it just makes them even harder to deal with. Facing up to the truth is the first step to coping with it - it’s beyond scandalous that ministers tried to prevent this. They need to act - and fast
Former Special Counsel Jack Smith:
"I stand by my decisions as special counsel, including the decision to bring charges against President Trump. Our investigation developed proof beyond reasonable doubt that President Trump engaged in criminal activity... No one should be above the law".
Half of world’s CO2 emissions come from just 32 fossil fuel firms.
Will get the worse as execs appease Trump, and shareholders count profits from destruction of livelihoods and the planet
Once again, the stealing of the 2000 election by the Wizards In Robes, who decided not everyone’s vote counted, wasn’t only the point at which 🇺🇸 stopped being anything approaching a democracy, it was also a world historical critical juncture for int’l politics. A fork in The Road Forward, as it were

Billionaire wealth jumps to highest ever at $18.3 trillion, up 16% in 2025, up 81% since 2020
Half the world lives in poverty.
Billionaires are 4,000 times more likely to hold political office than normal people.
Richest 56 Britons hold more wealth than 27m.
Concentration of wealth is a danger.
This is pretty much the only post anyone should need to understand that Farage is a traitor, a conman and a populist simpleton who must *never* be given power.
This tech could make green hydrogen at the same cost as brown (from fossil fuels) - that would be transformational for Hydrogen and the often discussed but never getting closer - Hydrogen economy. If these guys pull this off at scale, then I reckon we’re underway.

Labour introduce Armed Forces Bill to strengthening support for personnel, families and national security.
It creates the Defence Housing Service, sets the Armed Forces Covenant in law (delivering a manifesto committement), Strengthening the UK’s Strategic Reserve and much more!
Well done Labour!
We are lucky in the UK in a way.
We've had ringside seats to observe how things are going in the US when proto-fascists are voted in
Problem is, I've zero confidence we'll heed the warning
Just guessing here, but I suspect the White House is pushing so hard for wars of conquest on multiple fronts because they see their support collapsing ahead of the midterms and worry they won't get another shot. An example of how tyrants become more dangerous as they get weaker, not less.
People try to ascribe motives, strategy and logic to Trump but it's not acknowledged nearly enough that he's simply a spectacularly stupid man who happens to be extremely rich and entitled with it and therefore has gained a lot of power.
He's a very clear example of the Dunning Kruger effect.
Almost everything Reform UK really thinks is diametrically opposite to the views of the UK electorate - on vaccines, Russia, Trump, climate change, green energy, race and nation, trade with the EU, whatever. If they're elected on an immigration scare alone the buyers' remorse will be so, so fierce.
An important part of Farage press events is keeping track of his changing positions on, well, everything. It helps to be wildly credulous. thecritic.co.uk/poli...

The richest country in the world with the largest most expensive army.
The most people in prison, the lowest life expectancy, the highest medical costs, the highest murder rate and 60% of people living in poverty

France: oh yay we get to dust off our nuclear war plans against the Americans
When I have posted this in the past, people inevitably have asked "Did she come home?" so I will not wait until the end of the thread to tell you she did (she's still a nomad, but less so, as she hits her middle years). The story can be found here: www.tom-cox.com/the-cat-who-...
