Save Wivenhoe's Old King George Oak Tree
Our beloved 170 year old oak tree and others are at threat of felling in a subsidence claim. Aviva have pushed our council into this, while experts state underpinning would be better.

- Now that we are in February, the end of Winter is in sight. The snowdrops are in flower, we can see the daffodils getting ready for their display too. Will our lovely trees be able to put their display of verdant leaves on once more? Here's some photos from last spring after their crown reduction.
- A throwback to some photos from the "tie a yellow ribbon" event held last January, when the community of Wivenhoe gathered in sadness at the then impending felling. It's been more than a year now and the affected trees are still standing. We savour each day and season.
- Dare we start to feel hopeful that we might see these branches filled with an abundance of leaves soon? 🤞 🌳
- Just to keep you all up to speed, there’s no further news yet on the legal case. We’re still awaiting any response from the High Court or the defendant on the Judicial Review, including whether permission will be granted. We’ll share any updates as soon as we’re able.
- Tonight at 8.30 is the deadline for our first CrowdJustice funding milestone. We have already surpassed our minimum target of £10,000, but wouldn't it be great to smash it even more before the day is done? www.crowdjustice.com/case/save-wi... The site will then stay open for as long as it's needed.
- A huge thanks to all who helped organise the weekend's pop up shop and to all who came along. More than £1,000 was raised! More events to come soon.
- A reminder that tomorrow afternoon 1-5pm is the pop up shop in the shed behind Wivenhoe Bookshop, down Blythe Lane. Please pop along, say hello and while you're there, have a browse of the lovely things we have prepared for sale towards the legal case fundraiser
- A huge thank you to everyone who has helped us reach our first crucial fundraising target of £10,000 towards the CrowdJustice campaign, almost a week ahead of schedule! While there may still be a long and uncertain path ahead, for now we are taking a moment to celebrate this important milestone!

- We can't believe it! We are in touching distance of hitting our minimum funding target of £10,000. Thank you all so much for all the support, we are so close now, and seems like this all or nothing fundraiser will be able to progress onto our stretch target towards judicial review before long!

- A chance encounter at our protest outside Aviva’s HQ with @davidwhyte.bsky.social from the QMU Centre for Climate Crime and Climate Justice @ccccjustice.bsky.social led to a kind invitation to write a blog post. Read a focused view on the legal side of our story here ccccjustice.org/2026/01/21/t...
- We now have one week left to go to raise our minimum target of £10,000 on CrowdJustice, and it seems we are in the home stretch. Just £1223 left to go to hit this target. Please help to share and support in whatever way you are able www.crowdjustice.com/case/save-wi...
- Last weekend @chrismothman.bsky.social held two guided tree walks in the King George V field to raise funds. The weather was kind, the mood upbeat, and thanks the generosity of those who joined this raised an incredible £650. Thanks to all involved. More here: www.chrisgibsonwildlife.co.uk/blog/

- Wow, we can't believe that we are now on the home stretch with our CrowdJustice fundraiser. Less than £1,400 left to hit our minimum target in just over a week's time, please help to share this widely. Every contribution helps! www.crowdjustice.com/case/save-wi...
- www.change.org/p/save-wiven... we are also just 4 signatures short of 5,500 on the original Change petition, fancy helping us to cross to this milestone too?
- Thank you all so much for the generosity so far, today we have crossed over the 75% mark! We are getting there...Can you help us hit our target of £10,000 in the next 10 days? Please share our page and spread the word widely www.crowdjustice.com/case/save-wi...

- The car park resurfacing is near complete, with just markings to be repainted. It looks as if the fencing is being removed around the car park. The council have stated an intention to reopen as soon as possible. It appears fencing may remain around the oak tree known as Old King George for longer.

- Waiting to see what, if anything, happens regarding the resurfacing works in the car park around Old King George today. Nothing yet. We have highlighted concerns to the council about the potential for works in the root protection area to harm the trees, so we will keep an eye on works as they occur.
- A reminder of this weekend's major news - reporting that the family who own one of the two properties involved in claims of movement being handled by Aviva/Innovation Group and Wivenhoe Town Council don't actually want the trees to go either! They seek underpinning

- Tomorrow resurfacing works will start in the vicinity of Old King George. We have given lots of information to Wivenhoe Town Council regarding our concerns for potential harm to the trees while the injunction is in place, over to them to see if they can follow the relevant British standards!

- See our 'case updates' section on our CrowdJustice page for an update about today's news and our fundraising progress so far www.crowdjustice.com/case/save-wi...
- Today the front page of the Gazette leads with the story from one of the families affected by the ongoing movement issues near our trees, who say they 'don't want to see the trees chopped' and who, like us, think underpinning will be the best solution for them long term and avoid the need to fell.
- Wow today has been amazing, we have now reached £4,055 and counting. We are so grateful to each and every one of you for donations of any size, it's all making a difference together. Can we now reach the £5,000 mark?
- Thanks for all the support of our CrowdJustice page, we are fast approaching the 1/3 mark to our £10,000 minimum target! Can you help us nudge past this and start making progress towards the halfway point? www.crowdjustice.com/case/save-wi...
