- Reposted by Jan HaakerThis paper had a pretty shocking headline result (40% of voxels!), so I dug into it, and I think it is wrong. Essentially: they compare two noisy measures and find that about 40% of voxels have different sign between the two. I think this is just noise!
- Would love to hear expert views on this paper. It appears to show that the operationalization of brain activity the field has relied on for 3 decades—the BOLD response—is not actually a sensible measure of brain activity. www.nature.com/articles/s41...
- Reposted by Jan HaakerfMRI signals “up,” but neural metabolism might be going “down.” In our @natneuro.nature.com paper, we demonstrate that about 40% of voxels with robust BOLD responses exhibit opposite oxygen metabolism, revealing two distinct hemodynamic modes. rdcu.be/eUPO8 funds @erc.europa.eu #neuroskyence 🧵:

- Reposted by Jan HaakerThe party drug MDMA (“ecstasy”) shows promising efficacy as adjunct to psychotherapy. The psychostimulant with entactogenic properties is known to induce arousal and euphoria. We now studied the neurochemistry underlying the behavioral effects of MDMA in rats lacking serotonin in the brain.

- Reposted by Jan HaakerExcited to share that the main work of my PhD has been published! We found that having control over pain makes expectations more precise, and changes pain perception. - Reposted by Jan Haaker📢 Thrilled to share our paper is out now in @natcomms.nature.com Shared computations underlie how we acquire actions that are mutually beneficial, instrumentally harmful (benefits self at the expense of others), altruistic (benefit others at the expense of self), or mutually costly 🧵 rdcu.be/eL8mZ
- Can we learn about unpredictable threats via observation of others? Yes, temporally predictable and unpredictable threats are learned by distinct contributions of the amygdala and hippocampus. ALSO: We find higher activation in the amygdala and anterior insula to others' pain that serves learning.
- Excited to try this! The waiting list makes me even more curious
- Reposted by Jan HaakerOur new @frontiersin.bsky.social article focused on how learning strategies and #open-label-placebos (OLPs) can affect academic performance.
