- I taught a class on “hope” last year and the few theorists who’ve written on it all point out that hope is the harder choice - that despair is easy and too often fashionable
- Besides the splendid @roncharles.bsky.social and @johnwilliams.bsky.social and Becca Rothfeld, I'm thinking about former editors Nina King and Marie Arana and Jabari Asim and Michael Dirda. Book World has long had a unique and often surprising voice. What a terrible loss.
- It’s hard to put into perspective how truly massive the warehouse is that was recently sold by the Rockefeller Group to the Department of Homeland Security for $70 million to build a concentration camp in Surprise, AZ. Across the street is a huge neighborhood and a school. It’s 400,000-square-feet.

View full threadThe meeting is adjourned. Mayor Kevin Sartor ended the long meeting by saying “We hear you, we have a lot to consider and your voices are impactful and powerful.” Surprise showed tf up. The overflow room filled + hundreds outside. It ended with only 2 speakers in favor of the ICE camp.
- Highlighting the speaker who stood in front of the Surprise mayor and told him to consider what the Mayor of Ohrdruf must’ve thought before he died by suicide: “He might have thought ‘how is this my fault I had no jurisdiction over this’ maybe he said ‘this site was not subject to local zoning.’”

- It’s actually beautifully fluid. I could be wishing you gentle bees to make tasty honey or killer bees to stab you to death with tiny butt swords and you’ll never know which.

- I’m old and have a lot less at stake than many people. If I get arrested, I won’t lose my pension. If I get shot, I’ll lose 10-20 years of arthritis getting worse and worse. I have no reason not to rouse a little rabble.
- don't know if you meant it this way but this is the most hardcore Lutheran thing that's been written since Luther

- The anti-ICE/CBP rally in Chicago's Daley Plaza has grown significantly in just the last half hour. The crowd is spilling out into street; I'd say there's over a thousand people here at this point.

View full threadThe march in Chicago has continued on past Trump Tower and is turning back south into downtown. The snow is coming down hard now. As it does, the column chants, "say it once and say it twice, we do not fuck with ICE"
- It's near-white out conditions in Chicago as the snow comes down, and tonight's anti-ICE/CBP rally is wrapping up in front of city hall. But not before the crowd bounces and chants, "I believe that we will win!"

- Beyond helping establish DHS itself in 2003, Mr. Mitnick was a senate-confirmed Trump choice for General Counsel for DHS in his first term. I've talked with him a few times, and he's not a man for hyperbole. So bear that in mind when you see him calling out DHS's "lawlessness, fascism, and cruelty."

- This photo was taken in 1911 using glass plate technology by Herbert Ponting who was part of Scott's Antarctic expedition, The composition and detail are exquisite with the band of white snow/ice creating a perfect frame around the two people and the ship in the distance Iconic imo

- Thank you CNN for pointing out that everyone opposed to this regime has normal, pro-social links to the organizations that make up a liveable society where you can do normal shit. Next article you can talk about how the vice president, by contrast, is in nazi groupchats with minors

- “Why are folks getting dumber?” Because they don’t read. “Why aren’t men as romantic & poetic as they used to be?” Because they don’t read. “Why are people so vulnerable to propaganda?” “Why is everyone a conspiracy theorist?” Because they don’t read. Because they don’t read.
- As the literacy rate declines, you’ll ask yourself why the quality of life continues to deteriorate in ways large and small, and in almost every instance the answer will be: because people stopped reading.
