- In the last hour, dozens of GOP lawmakers began to denounce Trump's racist meme. Minutes ago, the White House capitulated and deleted the post. If those same lawmakers showed that same level of moral clarity when it comes to the Constitution & fair elections, the White House would capitulate. /1
- No joke: I got angry hate mail today for writing an obituary of a Black woman scientist—because the person felt she did didn’t deserve the recognition. Which just makes me want to share it again: www.nature.com/articles/d41...
- “I needed it for my own ego.”
- Demanding an estimate guarantees the estimate will not be useful to the business and will always drive costs up. Software engineers all know that estimates are useless. 1/6

- When the ghouls say we need to grow the economy before we can afford the basics for our people, remember that our economy has made our households - on AVERAGE - amongst the richest in the world. Our issue is not the size of the pie, it's the size of the slice that goes to the rentiers.
- This is an authoritarian power grab, full stop. Nationalizing elections would put the executive branch in control of who votes and how. That’s how dictators rig outcomes, crush opposition, and assault democratic self-government. This should alarm everyone: www.ms.now/news/trump-s...

- MSD have been delaying their December benefits data release due to data processing issues but they shared headline numbers yesterday. If the data is correct, this is a huuuge increase. We now have nearly 1 in 7 adults on a working age benefit. Link in ALT. (🧵 1/n)
- These two graphs show the 'recovery is here' vs sliding sideways issue nicely. Change in jobs (1) looks like it might push hard into positive growth, but the (dominant) service jobs data hints at the more likely outcome for 2026... settling at the current state. Basically no real growth at all.
- Worth adding the goods producing jobs too...

- It is terrible to see what is happening at The Washington Post. Democracy Docket is a small newsroom, but it is growing. If you want to work for an independent, pro-democracy media outlet, I encourage you to apply. ats.rippling.com/democracy-do...

- Employment and unemployment rates often misunderstood. Employment rates depend on number of ppl working relative to working age population. Unemployment rate ignores people who have given up looking for work. Cheers.
- It's cool to see the GOP going anti-gun. All it took was for a federal government-sanctioned force killing a white male nurse who had a gun, but didn't draw it, to decide that citizens should not have the right to bear arms at certain times...I'm sure this will end well.
- It was always crazy to me that the party that so wanted to rule in an authoritarian way for the past 40 years or so was also looking to arm the citizens they wanted to beat down and dominate. I guess that chicken is coming home to roost.

- Folds on the Kennedy Center 3 weeks ago: I was sick to my stomach when I quit because I knew they were going to run it into the ground. No one that they were appointing had any experience in arts administration, but that was never the point. The point was to take that, run over it, and move on.

- I wear a KN95 or FloMask in all public spaces. People react like I'm being aggressively political. Then I greet them the same way I would have before, interact with them in ordinary ways... and they relax. They've been told people like me are "crazy" and are surprised when it turns out I'm not 🙄

- 🚨"We are more concerned about jailing people standing up against ICE than jailing ICE killing us on the streets! They are not welcome here and they do not get to terrorize our communities!" -one of THOUSANDS of Minneapolis protesters marching in general strike. LIVE NOW ⬇️
- ICE’s tactics have been terrifying and tragic, but Minneapolis is responding in incredible ways. Residents are organizing, feeding and housing their neighbors, and putting real social infrastructure in place. What’s taking shape isn’t just a reaction, it’s a blueprint for resistance.

- Amazon just announced another round of 16,000 layoffs, months after it laid off 14,000 workers. Reminder that Amazon CEO Andy Jassy raked in over $40M in 2024. And Amazon is spending at least $75 million producing and promoting the Melania documentary. The system is rigged.
- In my real world I write fiction, but I've always loved the law and I wrote this bit about the 4A and what courts actually say is required to enter homes, in hopes to make it bite-sized and understandable for those of us who didn't go to law school. open.substack.com/pub/thisiswh...
- We need to talk about the rise of "smol bean fascism" where you have all the guns and the immunity but the really scary people are the ones with whistles and phone cameras and they're giving you generational trauma and ptsd by filming you killing people for no reason
