- Publication alert: In the new CEPA Discussion Paper, Joern Block, Miriam Gnad, Alexander Kritikos and Caroline Stiel investigate how declines in job satisfaction after a negative external shock are related to investment decisions of self-employed individuals. (1/3) ideas.repec.org/p/pot/cepadp...
- Having separated job satisfaction into its financial and non-financial aspects, they show that - decreasing financial job satisfaction is positively related to time investments into the venture; thus reduced financial job satisfaction induces higher search efforts to improve the business situation
- - reductions in non-financial job satisfaction are negatively associated with both time and monetary investments; negative experiences – in form of reduced non-financial job satisfaction – narrow the thought-action repertoire. (3/3)
- Here are some impressions from the 9th PhD Workshop in Empirical Economics taking place at the University of Potsdam. The event brings together young researchers to present and discuss their work, fostering exchanges and new perspectives. (1/3)
- Many thanks to our keynote speaker, @amandayagan.bsky.social , for delivering an inspiring keynote that set the tone for the event. (2/3)
- A big thank you as well to @amandayagan.bsky.social and @annabindler.bsky.social for contributing to the sessions on the academic job market — your insights and advice were invaluable for early-career researchers navigating this important stage. (3/3)
- New CEPA Discussion Paper: ideas.repec.org/p/pot/cepadp... Torben Klarl, Alexander S. Kritikos, and Knarik Poghosyan study where equity crowdfunding campaigns happen in Germany and how their locations relate to those of traditional investors like banks and venture capitalists. (1/2)
- Main finding: Equity crowdfunding is not closing the regional funding gap — it thrives where venture capital already flows. (2/2)
- New Research Paper by Lisa Bruttel, Holger Rau & @vasilisawerner.bsky.social: "Partial Cartels and Ringleaders: An Experimental Study": ideas.repec.org/p/pot/cepadp...
- Key Insights: - The possibility to form partial cartels creates opposing effects: the individual willingness to communicate decreases due to free-riding incentives, but overall, communication becomes more frequent because a coalition of firms willing to communicate cannot be blocked by one outsider.
- - Ringleader policies can backfire via a leading-by-example effect where information about ringleader activities motivates other firms to participate in the cartel which increases prices compared to settings without such policies.
- These findings underline the importance of nuanced antitrust policy approaches. Explore the detailed coordination mechanisms of partial cartels in our study.
- The 3rd Workshop on Societal and Policy Problems took place in Potsdam last week, organized by CEPA members @katrinhuber.bsky.social, @shushmargaryan.bsky.social, and @emarkowsky.bsky.social.

- In a new CEPA Discussion Paper, Marco Caliendo, Deborah A. Cobb-Clark, @katrinhuber.bsky.social, Harald Pfeifer, @arneuhlendorff.bsky.social, and Sophie Wagner examine how gender shapes managers’ decisions regarding on-the-job training, offering new insights into the supply side of training. 1/3
- Using a discrete choice experiment with German firms, they find that while women are slightly more likely to receive training overall, young women are less often selected-especially by female managers. Male managers, on the other hand, favor male employees when training is fully employer-funded. 2/3
- The study highlights how managerial discretion shapes early career opportunities and reinforces gender gaps in training access. 3/3 🔗 Read the full paper: ideas.repec.org/p/pot/cepadp... #GenderDifferences #ManagerDecisions #HumanCapitalInvestment #OnTheJobTraining #CEPA
- How communication fosters collusion A novel meta-study by Max Andres (@hatrecht.bsky.social) and Lisa Bruttel utilizes seeded LDA to analyze communication and decision data from oligopoly experiments. ideas.repec.org/p/pot/cepadp...
- Results show that only mutual agreements are decisive for the strong positive effect of communication on collusion, while the effect of other communication topics – including unilateral promises – is negligible.
