- Manx Shearwaters winter in the South Atlantic Ocean, predominantly off Brazil and Argentina. These birds begin returning to oceans surrounding the UK by late February, so start keeping an eye out for them 'shearing' over the sea! #seabirds @btobirds.bsky.social @jncc.bsky.social @rspb.bsky.social

- (1/) This week’s featured square is a difficult one to get to! It is a two hour walk from the closest civilisation, and if the tide isn’t right, it is a much longer walk! Read on to find out more… @btobirds.bsky.social @jncc.bsky.social @rspbscience.bsky.social @btoscotland.bsky.social

- Although BBS and the Winter Bird Survey are not really about monitoring rare birds, this proves that rare birds do sometimes find their way onto the randomly selected squares of the surveys (well, in this case, almost anyway!) @btobirds.bsky.social @jncc.bsky.social @rspbscience.bsky.social
- Went to do my January WINBS @bbs-birds.bsky.social visit today and this Killdeer was just outside my square (about 250m!). Still, hundreds of Rook and Stock Dove made up for it a bit. Rubbish record shots with both my scope and camera! @hosbirding.bsky.social @dorsetbirdclub.bsky.social #UKbirding
- East or west? Tracking work from 2017-2020 by BTO staff provided the first evidence of Scottish breeding Arctic Skuas wintering off South America! Other individuals wintered along the western and southern African coast. #seabirds @btobirds.bsky.social @jncc.bsky.social @rspb.bsky.social

- BTO WBS Copmanthorpe West fields. Highlight of the mid winter surveys is a count of 19 grey partridges. Not sure whether this is the low vegetation making the count easier or a successful breeding season in 2025 but it's great to see. @yorkbirding.bsky.social @btobirds.bsky.social

- (1/) This week’s featured vacant BBS square is situated just northwest of Buckingham in Buckinghamshire. There are plenty of similar vacant squares across the UK at present, so please read on to find out more! @btobirds.bsky.social JNCC RSPB Science #Ornithology
- 1/2 Curlew – wonderfully charismatic, desperately threatened and in need of urgent action if they are to remain part of our landscape. That’s why the launch of the UK Curlew Species Action Plan yesterday in the House of Lords is so important. #Ornithology #Curlew

- Goldcrests might be tiny, but they can certainly travel a long way. A male Goldcrest ringed in Lincolnshire was caught alive 1,665 km away in northern Sweden 11 months later! #Winterwatch
