- (1/) The wild song of Mistle Thrush can be heard in many parts of the UK at the moment. This hardy species even has a habit of delivering it during periods of poor weather. Listen to it here: youtu.be/QLT913D3qHw... @btobirds.bsky.social JNCC RSPB Science
- (2/) This feisty and sometimes aggressive species declined by 38% across the UK between 1995 and 2023. Find out some of the possible reasons behind this decline on our BirdFacts page about this species: www.bto.org/learn/ab... #Ornithology #CitizenScience
- (1/) If you are thinking of surveying a BBS square in the future and you would like to boost your birdsong identification, why not sign up for our ‘Birdsong in Early Spring’ online training course?: www.bto.org/our-work... @btobirds.bsky.social JNCC RSPB Science

- (1/) Tree Sparrows are more typically seen in hedgerows rather than trees across the UK. This species declined by 98% 1967–2023. It now has a very patchy distribution, so it can be quite a challenging species to find in many areas. @btobirds.bsky.social @jncc.bsky.social @rspbscience.bsky.social
- (2/) The BBS trend for this species, which covers the period between 1995 and 2023, shows a 39% increase across the UK.This species especially increased in Scotland, during that time, with a significant 400% increase!
- (3/) The situation across the UK is fairly nuanced, with a 10 year trend that shows a 37% decline between 2013 and 2023. You can find out more about this distinctive species, with its brown head and black cheek spots, on our BirdFacts page: www.bto.org/learn/about-...
- (1/) This week’s featured square is a difficult one to get to! It is a two hour walk from the closest civilisation, and if the tide isn’t right, it is a much longer walk! Read on to find out more… @btobirds.bsky.social @jncc.bsky.social @rspbscience.bsky.social @btoscotland.bsky.social
- (2/) We have featured images of just some of the more unusual bird species that have been recorded on this square over the years. There are other squares like this one in other parts of the UK, if you fancy the challenge of getting to them and surveying them! #Ornithology #CitizenScience
- (3/) In order to survey a BBS square, you will need to be able to identify the birds that are typically recorded in the square by sight, song and call. This varies considerably from square to square.
