- I’m such a sucker for pop art crochet patterns www.etsy.com/listing/4369...
- Here is my latest. Sylvain Charlebois, Canada's beloved commentator on the food industry, thinks that not giving us access to raw milk is communism. noraloreto.substack.com/p/canadas-fo...
- Something I noticed as a kid was that when I was 16, men acted like they thought I was an adult, but once I turned 18, people were constantly telling me they thought I was younger than that and I think it’s related to this general creepiness and evil.
- Look if I let myself start crying about all the women, especially women of color, that I saw pushed out of physics and astronomy by people who subscribe to sexist and racist views, I truly might never stop The things I saw and heard the grief feels enormous and bottomless

- I've mentioned this before: think about food. Food culture permeates across all borders, survives the worst atrocities. It is damn near impossible to kill a recipe. Now think of how many Native American *recipes*, not ingredients, there are That is how thorough the genocide of manifest destiny was

- The most maddening thing when talking about sex pests in media is that the genre actually doesn't matter. They're literally everywhere. And they love to form their own creepy networks. But if you respond in kind, somehow you're the problem.

- A big problem in the industry is how many people conflate "Not a danger to me" with "Not a danger to anyone." And I keep seeing the terrible impact of that so maybe stop doing that.
- the Epstein files are really devastating because they remind me of how many girls and women miss out on professional opportunities, mentorship and careers because of how many powerful, rich and influential men only view girls and women — and interactions with them — through the lens of sex

- All these men driving women out of their fields with giggly idiot grabassery and then bloviating to the public about how the lack of women is proof of male intellectual superiority... I hate them all. I hate them so much.

- Which is all to say that in this case, the whisper network not only didn't manage to effect material change, but it didn't even do the bare minimum of warning people in advance. We also need institutions to have a backbone when it comes to employees who bully or harass in any way. [4/n]

- It's more towards the bullying side than other kinds of abuse, but I remember that when I turned down a postdoc job with Nick Longrich because something felt off at the interview, several senior people only said to me *afterwards* "I hear you dodged a bullet" and similar phrases. [1/n]
- Scientists when asked to incorporate indigenous science: See, that is very anecdotal and it is not possible to extrapolate. Scientists on scientists in the EF: I met the chap for 15 mins at a conference; he was very nice to me, I feel confident extrapolating that to say he is impeachable.
- I need everyone to know that on the crochet subreddit the mods made a big post about how they're taking a week off because there was too much fighting/political posts. so there's currently no mods on r/crochet and people are being absolutely insane
- good lord, I love how the most unhinged thing I've ever posted On Here gets the most likes. anyway, I am pure of heart and only make beautiful things like this monarch butterfly cardigan (just finished it this week!)
- I think often of the women in the Louis CK story—how they all left comedy and never went back, but he’s still going. It’s everywhere and it’s such a loss for them and for us—for things they’ll never make that we’ll never see.

- It’s infuriating and dispiriting how cozy scientists and science communicators were with Epstein. Not just creeps like Krauss and Horner, but former SciAm editor-in-chief Mariette DiChristina corresponding with Epstein in 2014-2015. “He’s done so much for science, I think that deserves some fun!”

- “Why doesn’t the public trust science? Why doesn’t the public like us?” is common sci/comm navel gazing and then there’s this going on the whole while. I’m absolutely disgusted by how many people I met, how many people who acted like gatekeepers telling me what I should do, all tied to this predator

- Time for university administrators to stop buying AI hype. None of my very smart and eager-to-learn students wanted anything to do with chatbots.
- ‘Study after study shows that students want to develop these critical thinking skills, are not lazy, and large numbers of them would be in favor of banning ChatGPT and similar tools in universities’, says @olivia.science www.ru.nl/en/research/...

- Went to a doctor’s appointment this morning to have a doctor tell me my BMI indicates I’m obese. They may as well have told me that the shape of my skull indicates a lack of philoprogenitiveness.

- I'm not shocked. Honestly, it's a form of copaganda for the media to present police corruption and violence, which happens everywhere, as unusual and shocking. The details change, the level of violence and corruption changes, but it's always there.
- Context: this speech is from SIR THOMAS MORE, a history written, as near as scholars can tell, in the early 1600s by 6 or 7 people including Dekker, Heywood, Chettle, Shakespeare, and Munday. It was never performed, because Jacobean England was a police state and it was banned by the censor.
- Sir Ian McKellen performing a monologue from Shakespeare’s Sir Thomas More on the Stephen Colbert show. Never have I heard this monologue performed with such a keen sense of prescience. Nor have I ever been in this exact historical moment.TY Sir Ian, for reaching us once again. #Pinks #ProudBlue
- A new study from Anthropic finds that gains in coding efficiency when relying on AI assistance did did not meet statistical significance; AI use noticeably degraded programmers’ understanding of what they were doing. Incredible.

- I know it’s intentional but we should stop calling everything AI, lumping useful machine learning techniques for science with large language models that tech companies are trying to cram into everything.
- AI to track icebergs adrift at sea. British scientists say a world-first AI tool to catalogue and track icebergs as they break apart into smaller chunks could fill a "major blind spot" in predicting climate change u.afp.com/S2sA
- the number of academics who were in touch with Epstein really puts the (elite) backlash to Title IX's enforcement against sexual violence into perspective.
