- Today’s cozy cabin vibes combine the calm of snowy seclusion with the chaos of proposal writing. ‘Tis the season! 🌲❄️
- The Coastal MicroEco Lab had a blast at the CERF @cerfscience.bsky.social conference! Congrats to lab members Camille and Marley for superb posters and THANKS to panelists/participants of collab sesh with @ellewoodsofmyco.bsky.social) focused on integrating microbes into restoration efforts 🌎🦠🧬
- Today’s win so far is when the barista handed me my chai latte and told me to “enjoy,” I refrained from saying, “you too.” 🥇
- Fall views in the salt marsh = some of my favorite field work days 🍁🌱🧬

- First time out with the entire lab, too!
- Sometimes #academicmom life is writing a proposal narrative draft on your phone with two kids sitting in your lap while watching Bluey on a Friday night.
- At #ESA2025? Ideas on how to expand above and belowground community datasets? Check out: SS 10 "Time is of the Essence: Toward Meeting the Pressing Need for Paired Long-Term Sampling of Above- and Belowground Communities." BCC 338 Mon 10:30-11:30. We will discuss practical ideas & form a network!
- If you missed today’s session, want to learn more, or just get in touch, check out our working group website: francis-chaves.github.io/Above-Belowg...
- Exciting news, our SPARC proposal has been funded! Our project brings together experts across disciplines and will explore above-belowground coupling/synchrony. Big thanks to @uslter.bsky.social! lternet.edu/stories/thre... 🌱🦠📉🌎 #LTER #SPARC #plants #microbes #SynthesisScience #TeamScience

- Woot!! 🎉🧬
- Interested in what we can learn from microbes in coastal restoration efforts? Submit an abstract to our session for @cerfscience.bsky.social in Nov: "Microscopic to Mighty: Harnessing Microbial Ecology for Restoration Success", co-led by the fabulous @ellewoodsofmyco.bsky.social! #CERF2025
- CERF 2025 Registration is NOW OPEN! Join us November 9–13, 2025, in Richmond, Virginia for an incredible opportunity to connect, learn, and grow with fellow coastal and estuarine science professionals. #CERF2025 🔗 Secure your spot today at conference.cerf.science
- Scientific session not enough? Be sure to check out our *collab session* "Microbes in coastal restoration: Networks bridging science, policy, and practice" that provides a space for networking and idea sharing about incorporating microbial information into restoration practices! #CERF2025

- Such devastating news @vscooper.micropopbio.org. Still processing how to move forward through all this.
- My REU in 2011 helped me understand I had a path in research. Since then, I’ve had the privilege of mentoring several REU’s, many of whom have gone onto grad school or scientific careers. The gutting of these programs will have a devastating impact for many years. www.science.org/content/arti...
- Frantically finding a new (and safe) daycare for my two kids in the midst of a childcare shortage because of a carbon monoxide emergency was certainly NOT something I planned for... Please, please - make it stop.

- We felt it big time in Portsmouth, NH!
- Heavy day, heavy week. Here if anyone needs to talk it out. I got your back no matter what!
- Excited to be a part of a project led by friend and colleague Sophie Comer-Warner. We aim to disentangle complex drivers of biogeochemical cycling by generating in-depth characterization of dissolved organic matter and metabolite pools. Stay tuned! www.emsl.pnnl.gov/news/emsl-se...
- Presented my research as part of the Postdoctoral Diversity and Innovation Scholar program at UNH. Humbled to be surrounded by such impressive human beings! 🦠🌊🌎

- Stoked to be a JGI CSP New Investigator recipient with co-PIs @bowenlab.bsky.social & Gregg Moore. We’ll look at the microbial response to tidal restoration flow in salt marshes jgi.doe.gov/announcement.... Grateful to be included alongside some amazing scientists! 🌎🧪
- We found that sediments from chronically N-enriched marshes demonstrated lower respiration rates and higher DNF:DNRA ratios in response to added nitrate. Check it out if you’re into microbes, marshes, C & N cycling, and lab-based experiments 🧪🌎🧬 www.sciencedirect.com/science/arti...

- This week, I made it into the field for the first time in YEARS and did so while 8 months pregnant! Plus, submitted a long overdue paper. I’m back! #SciSky🧪🌎

- Hi 👋 I haven’t yet but planning to next spring/summer in Florida & BVI potentially. Would love to connect!
- How are we finding COVID booster appointments for kiddos under 3? Nothing popping up for us on vaccines.gov and we're in between pediatricians due to a recent move.
- Another day, another (guy) doctor telling me to lay off the carbs. Dangerous words to say to a pregnant woman.
- Now that I’ve made the switch, I’ll share that after stepping away from academia for a few years to teach secondary, I’m back in the research world. I have thoughts about coming back, which I’ll share soon enough. I’m here if you’re looking for a microbial ecologist to collaborate with!
