- This week, here are some of the ways I have used your voice as your MSP: • Worked on new laws to help crofters • Made things easier for people using railway via Inverness • Secured funding for research into supporting market gardeners. • Challenged the government on salmon mortality reporting
- 🌍💚 This World Wetlands Day marks 30 years of celebrating wetlands – and a really special moment for Scotland. Last week, I secured the passing of Amendment 186, which for the first time gives Scotland’s internationally important Ramsar wetlands statutory protection in law.
- This week here are some of the ways I have been representing the Highlands and Islands... Due to the election period there is no regular newsletter being sent, but please do email me with any issues or comments. #ScottishGreens
- Reposted by Ariane Burgess MSP💯days to go! With more MSPs we can and will do even more to cut the cost of living, deliver climate action and stand against the politics of hate being peddled by parties like Reform. It's time to bring back hope - join the fight today: greens.scot/join
- Reposted by Ariane Burgess MSPJust 100 days to go. It's time to choose hope. #VoteScottishGreens
- Reposted by Ariane Burgess MSPWe did it. Swift bricks into law. We made Scotland a better country for these beautiful birds. Thank you @hannahbournetaylor.bsky.social! More to come from @scottishgreens.org in today's final sessions for the Natural Environment Bill today - watch this space!
- Reposted by Ariane Burgess MSPThe two child benefit cap is and will always be cruel and immoral. There is more than enough money to support everyone. We need to stop the super rich hoarding it all!
- Welcome news!
- 🚨 It's official! Swift nesting bricks have passed the Scottish Parliament and will now become law. Swifts are in serious decline across the UK. This will help reverse that trend and make our communities more liveable for birds. @markruskell.bsky.social and @writerhannah.bsky.social explain 👇
- Reposted by Ariane Burgess MSP🌳The Greens helped get this Bill into Parliament, now it’s time for action to restore nature for good
- 🏠 Have your say about the way we heat our buildings... The UK Government is consulting on this now. Deadline is 10 February 2026
- ⚖️ I spoke in Parliament about the crisis in civil legal aid in the Highlands and Islands. Too many people here can’t find a civil legal aid solicitor and are being forced to face the legal system alone – including disabled people, single parents and survivors of domestic abuse.

- A quick update from Parliament for some of the work I have been doing this week 👋 I can’t send out my usual newsletter during the election period, but I’ll be back with emails as soon as the election period allows. In the meantime, thank you as always for staying engaged and getting in touch 💚
- Rural and island areas are often overlooked when it comes to boosting public transport use, and £2 bus fares will be an important step to better connect the Highlands and Islands for both locals and visitors to enjoy and explore our beautiful country with a minimal impact on our climate.
- This week I… I can’t send out my regular newsletter now we are close to the election period. If you want to contact me please do via email: Ariane.burgess.msp@parliament.scot
- We have shown the impact Green voices can have. It is Green MSPs and Green members who delivered free bus travel for everyone under 22, removed peak rail fares and scrapped school meal debt. There are fantastic Green councillors in our city chambers and town halls, delivering real grassroots action.
- This is a really concerning admission and a huge underestimate. It seriously undermines the credibility of Salmon Scotland and the claims they make about the impact of their industry.
- I’ve had the privilege of serving as the Scottish Green MSP for the Highlands & Islands since 2021. I’ve worked across one of the most beautiful, diverse, and geographically spread regions in Scotland. I’ve heard firsthand the challenges people face — from housing shortages and the cost of living
- Back in Parliament this week, pushing for fairer outcomes for rural and island communities As we move towards the election, I am no longer able to send out my regular newsletter so here is the best way to follow my work over the coming months. #ScottishGreens #HighlandsAndIslands #BusFareCap
- Wishing everyone a very happy Hogmanay and all good wishes for the year ahead. Here’s to health, hope and fresh starts in the New Year.
- As 2025 draws to a close, I’m grateful for the people, communities and colleagues I’ve worked alongside this year. It’s been a year of challenge and progress, and I remain committed to pushing for practical change that makes life fairer and more liveable for everyone in the Highlands and Islands.
- Merry Christmas to those who a celebrating today 🕊️
- Wishing everyone a joyful and restful holiday season. I hope it brings moments of calm, connection and care, however and wherever you are spending it.
- Recently I added changed to the law to make it easier for people to access public land for low-impact, sustainable hutting. Thank you to Peter Macqueen for sending me a copy of 'The Art of Hutting' book to read!
- This week was the final week in Parliament before a two-week break. Here are some of the ways I spoke up for you in the Highlands and Islands: I wish you all a wonderful festive season Ariane
- Brilliant to be with the Scottish Food Coalition as they celebrated their 10th anniversary — and the real progress Scotland is making towards becoming a Good Food Nation. This strong coalition knows that personal and planetary health both start with good food.
- A lot of people have different opinions about the NC500 and how it affects life in the North Highlands. NC500 Ltd is now creating an Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) Framework to get a better picture of how the route impacts local communities, the environment, and the economy.
- This week was a busy one - here are some of the highlights 👇
- No child should be too hungry to learn. The Scottish Greens are expanding free school meals - and we’re fighting for more. If you want to see Scotland’s children fed and thriving, vote Scottish Greens. 💚
- 💚 New polling shows our movement growing fast — with the Scottish Greens on track to more than double our MSPs. People across Scotland are demanding credible action on the cost of living crisis and the climate emergency, and it’s clear our message is resonating.
- Delighted to see our plans for swift bricks pass at this stage of the Natural Environment Bill. A small change that will make a big difference. Thank you to Mark Ruskell for driving this and to colleagues across parties for backing it. Let’s keep building a Scotland that gives nature a home
- Scotland’s salmon farms are seeing the highest figures for fish dying since 1987, yet many early deaths aren’t even counted. At Portree, Bakkafrost told regulators there were 0 deaths, while telling investors 19% of fish died in the first weeks at sea. I asked the Minister to close these loopholes
- Great to see John Stuart joining the Greens as a councillor for Buckie. He's a great voice for equalities. It's brilliant to see him getting involved with the Moray Greens and the party as a whole. A warm welcome to him and Ross McKenzie
- 💚 With membership at a record high, now is the perfect time to join us 💚 Record numbers of people are choosing hope, hope for our communities and our climate.
- 📢 New Job Opportunity with the Scottish Greens 💚 Comms & Research Assistant for the Parliamentary Group 👉
- Here are some of ways I have spoken up for you this week: 💚Asked the Scottish Government to support more Green jobs 📢 Called out the UK Government for its political stunt on Cameron Barracks. 🚌 Welcomed Green budget proposals to extend free bus travel to under 30s.
- Our free bus pass for under-22s has been transformational — over 250 million journeys so far, including over 321,000 here in the Highlands & Islands. It’s saved young people and families a fortune, opened doors to work and education, and helped us cut climate pollution.

- 💚 SAVE OUR SWIFTS 💚 I'm supporting my colleague Mark Ruskell in his plans that would require all new buildings above a certain size to install swift nesting boxes as part of their design.
