- Reposted by Alicia GilbertThe "smartphones/social media" discourse suffers from some amazing historical amnesia. There was no 2008 financial crisis and no global pandemic starting in 2020, it's all SCREENS SCREENS SCREENS. Major world events? Just the backdrop against which SCREENS happened.
- New preprint from our digital disconnection project with @klingelhoefer.bsky.social and @adrianmeier.bsky.social We find that #disconnection can help to reduce #procrastination.
- Reposted by Alicia GilbertExcited to see these studies (finally) published in Scientific Reports! 🚨 S1: More social media users perceived themselves as addicted than met clinical addiction criteria. S2: Increasing perceived addiction hurt perceived control over use and increased self-blame for overuse. Thread below... 🧵
- Reposted by Alicia Gilbert5️⃣/🔟 In Scientific Reports, 5 of the top 10 most cited articles have an article number of 1. 5️⃣/🔟 In Nature Communications the same: 5 of the top 10 are article 1s. Coincidence? 👇 scirate.com/arxiv/2511.0... I think not.

- and here we are in 2025, when @economist.com publishes nonsense on AI facereading for evaluating people's hirability -- the lack of historic awareness is staggering
- the article in question, starting with: "Imagine appearing for a job interview and, without saying a single word, being told that you are not getting the role because your face didn’t fit. You would assume discrimination..." YEAH WELL

- Reposted by Alicia GilbertThank you @overbye.bsky.social — going to Greece to present the paper wasn’t so bad either 👀 Also thanks to my wonderful co-authors @aliciaernst.bsky.social, @rkreling.bsky.social, @aliciagilbert.bsky.social, @mscharkow.bsky.social, @leonardreinecke.bsky.social and Benedikt! - Fabulous study by @felix-dietrich.de @aliciaernst.bsky.social @rkreling.bsky.social et al., examining how algorithmic curation affects music streaming UX. Key finding: More algorithmic recommendations = less enjoyment, BUT listening sessions w/algorithmic curation were perceived as more novel 🧪

- Reposted by Alicia GilbertAnother year, another full slate of @icamobile.bsky.social student and early career scholar events! Here are the details:
- 💡Pub alert 💡 Why do users stop a media activity? Today I presented "101 reasons to stop: A systematic review of media cues for disengagement" at #CHIGreece2025 🏖️ The full paper - the 3rd of my PhD thesis - is now available #openaccess at dl.acm.org/doi/10.1145/... Summary below ⬇️
- Disengagement = users stop a media use activity in a given situation. Whereas internal (psycho-physiological) & external context cues (e.g., temporal, spatial) have been theoretically organized, #media cues remain to be systematized. ➡️ We conducted a systematic review of 27 studies & 90 media cues.
- (1) Structure of the field: 📍Research centered in the US & Germany 📍Computer science most prominent so far, followed by information science & communication science 📍19% of studies with an industry partner 📍Mostly exploratory methods 📍Focus on information search & gaming media

- Returned from this year's #MediaPsych25 conference in Duisburg with lots of inspiration, food for thought, & new ideas (note to self: no, you cannot start 2 more projects). Got valuable feedback on my theoretical work on #disengagement - why & how do users stop exposure? @mepsy.bsky.social (1/3)
- #MediaPsych25 was also an excellent opportunity to get feedback on our current project on #disconnection from #messaging. It seems that situational #norm salience is the main predictor of (dis)connection - stay tuned! @mqrmobile.bsky.social @joebayer.bsky.social @leonardreinecke.bsky.social (2/3)
- Finally, after the conference is before the conference. 🤠 Next week, our team will head to #CHIGreece2025 on beautiful Syros. 🏖️ We'll present recent work on media cues for #disengagement & on #algorithmic recommendations in music streaming - watch this space! chigreece.gr/2025/program... (3/3)
