Afzal Khan MP
MP for Manchester Rusholme | Awarded Labour MP of the Year 2024
- Absolutely horrified to learn about the attack on Tarlai's Imambargah in Islamabad. My thoughts and prayers are with the families of the injured and of lost loved ones. Violence is never the answer.
- Reposted by Afzal Khan MPAir pollution is now formally recognised as a cancer risk in Europe. “Individuals are encouraged to limit their exposure by choosing public transport, walking or cycling…and keeping homes free of smoke by avoiding the burning of coal or wood”. #WorldCancerDay #AirPollution
- Here's a list of everyone who voted to lift 450,000 children out of poverty last night. More importantly - there's also a list of those who voted against. Looking for Farage? He didn't even bother to turn up.
- Labour's fantastic Minister for the Middle East and North Africa Hamish Falconer joined our campaign in Denton and Gorton over the weekend to support Angeliki Stogia.🌹 Only Labour can defeat Reform and their vile campaign of hatred and division.
- Reposted by Afzal Khan MPReform’s been mysteriously quiet about their DOGE work recently. Maybe it’s because they’ve spent: 🅿️ £600k on free councillor parking in Kent 💷 £1.4m on “cost-cutting” consultants in Leicestershire 🏢 £5,000/day on empty offices in Worcestershire So much for “efficiency”. 🤡
- 👇This new report lays bare the horrifying scale of abuse, hatred and discrimination faced by Muslim women and girls across the UK. Hatred against Muslims continues to plague our communities. A clear, effective definition of Islamophobia is the essential first step in tackling it.
- Labour's Warm Homes Plan will deliver for those living in fuel poverty - upgrading homes with insulation, solar panels, and heat pumps.✔️ This Labour Government is putting efficiency and sustainability at the heart of its plans to cut bills and tackle fuel poverty.

- I've put together just some of the many ways in which myself and the Labour Party delivered for my constituents in 2025.🌹 Read my annual report using the link below:📖 buff.ly/8ChppbY
- This is racism - plain and simple. The people of Gorton and Denton deserve better than this. Vote Labour to keep this rhetoric out of Manchester. www.theguardian.com/politics/202...
- Reposted by Afzal Khan MPOnly Labour can defeat Reform in Gorton and Denton. A vote for the Greens or any other party risks them getting in. We are a tolerant, proud, progressive city and we don’t want their divisive brand of politics here.
- Reposted by Afzal Khan MPThis report is a shocking reminder that the temporary accommodation crisis is devastating the lives of children across the UK. I welcome the commitments made by the Government in the National Plan to End Homelessness, but the needs of neurodivergent children must be explicit in these measures

- Today marks Holocaust Memorial Day. Today, we remember the six million Jewish people and millions of others who were killed because they were from marginalised groups, as well as the other genocides around the world. We must always stand against fascism.

- Reform’s Laila Cunningham is stoking hatred by saying women in burkas have something to hide. This is yet more dangerous rhetoric from Reform. We’re better than this and she knows it. Maybe she's just projecting? Given her boss hid his extra earnings – it’s no wonder she’s so quick to distrust.

- Today Labour is pushing forward and bringing your energy bills down with our Warm Homes Plan.🏠 Backed by £15 billion in investment - we are tackling fuel poverty by changing our energy system to provide you with clean, green, affordable energy.💡 🌳
- Under the Tories, water companies waited until our pipes and pumps burst before they bothered to fix them - and they let them get away with it. Labour is stopping this for good - preventing you from suffering water shortages and coming down hard on companies that have failed us for too long.
- Greater Manchester Police has consistently met government targets on hiring - keeping our community safe. 🌇 👮 But it faces significant funding issues which need resolving. I've raised GMP funding with the Home Secretary. Adequate funding is needed to allow our Force to do their vital work.
- The Israeli government is threatening to prevent international non-governmental organisations from providing life saving services across Palestine. I am working with MPs to make sure the Foreign Secretary applies pressure on the Israeli Government to allow full access to live-saving treatment.
- X's Grok has been used to spread disgusting illegal sexualised images, as well as to spread vile Islamophobic disinformation. I'm calling for Ofcom to investigate the use of Grok for illegal and dangerous activities, and I support any action taken against X to stop it.
- I’ve written to the Prime Minister calling on the Government to mark Islamophobia Awareness Month in November and take urgent action to tackle rising anti-Muslim hate by adopting the definition presented to them this week promptly.
- My statement on the Gaza Ceasefire Deal👇
- I shared my deep condolences today to the victims families & the community This vile act of terror on Yom Kippur is felt across the country I stand with the Jewish community. We must continue to come together during these difficult times. Antisemitism and bigotry will never win in Manchester
- Horrifying news out of Crumpsall this morning following a major incident. I want to thank the police for swift action. Praying for the whole community on this holy day. Violence is never the answer and Manchester must stand together against these actions.
- This week marked National Fitness Day so it was great to join Councillors and UK Active at Moss Side Leisure Centre. Physical activity is essential for our physical, mental, and social well-being. Join a local leisure centre, gym, sports club, or even get out for a walk to support your own health.
- President Trump’s Islamophobic language towards Mayor Sadiq Khan is unacceptable. The UK must stand together to fight back on xenophobia and racism - it is not welcome here and we will not be divided.
- Incredible to attend the first flag raising at the Palestinian Embassy as the UK formally recognised the State of Palestine. I have campaigned on recognition for decades, but we cannot stop here. I will continue to press the Government to secure a ceasefire and a lasting two-state solution.
- The UK has recognised the state of Palestine. But, recognition without action is meaningless. Recognition must now be accompanied by: - release of all hostages - an immediate ceasefire - unrestricted humanitarian aid - a halt to settlement expansion - full accountability for all war crimes
- The UK must recognise the state of Palestine - it is overdue. Read my full thoughts in the London Daily: buff.ly/lIWohpi
- Only 30% of autistic people are in employment, compared to 82% of neurotypical, non-disabled people. We must take urgent action to ensure autistic people have fair access to the labour market, including an awareness campaign with employers. Listen to my full intervention 👇
- Qatar is a UK ally and a key mediator in Gaza ceasefire talks. The UK must draw a line in the sand and call out this Israeli Government for what it is - a danger to peace in the Middle East. Here's my question to the Middle East Minister.
- I have written to the Prime Minister to express my concerns regarding the Israeli President’s visit to the UK. 👇 The UK has a legal and moral responsibility to ensure we are not complicit in legitimising those accused of international crimes.
- My response to the unacceptable attack on Qatar by Israeli authorities.
- Cars parked on the pavement can be frustrating and dangerous. 5 years ago, there was a consultation into giving councils powers to tackle this, but the Tories ignored it. I've written to Minister Greenwood & 36 Labour MPs to share our support to end this practice. Pavements are for people

- It was fantastic to meet with Manchester's Lord Mayor to celebrate the hard work by the Consul Generals of both Pakistan and Türkiye as their diplomatic missions come to an end. It is great to live and represent a city with so much diversity and I wish them all the best on their future missions!

- I joined 220 MPs in signing a cross-party letter urging UK recognition of the State of Palestine ahead of next week’s UN summit. The horrors we are seeing go beyond comprehension. We must join the majority of the world & give substance to our commitment to a two-state solution.

- Following record levels of Islamophobic attacks, this Labour Government has established a fund to boost victim support and strengthen online & office hate crime reporting nationwide through the British Muslim Trust. 👇
- I commemorated 30 years since the Srebrenica Genocide. We remember the thousands of Muslim men and boys who were systematically murdered and buried in mass graves during the Bosnian war. We must stand firm in our commitment to never forget the victims of these atrocities.
- Great news that Pakistan Airlines has been removed from the UK Air Safety List, allowing it to apply to resume flights between the two countries. Many constituents had expressed concerns regarding the ban, and I am glad to have campaigned for this issue.

The event was a huge success, showcasing over twenty organisations who are working tirelessly to reduce health inequalities to cross-party Parliamentarians, and the Minister for Public Health and Prevention.

- I am abstaining from this vote, as today's vote also includes proscribing well-known & violent neo-Nazi groups. I can't in good conscience vote in a way that represents my and my constituents' views with these groups being voted on all together. My letter to the Home Secretary👇
- I’ve listened to constituents' concerns and I will not be voting in support of the Welfare Reform Bill. Read my statement below 👇
- Happy Independence Day to Somalia! It was a pleasure to join the celebrations at Alexandra Park over the weekend, and to wish Somalia peace and prosperity for the year ahead. Hambalyo maalinta xorriyadda! ✨
- I had an important discussion on 'Dental Deserts' in Parliament with the Association of Dental Groups.🦷 Over 2,700 dentist vacancies are leaving millions without care, including many of my constituents. I will continue to advocate for this urgent issue.
