- Part of my book on backlash politics since Reconstruction focuses on the shoring up of Jim Crow in the early 20th century through a combination of Confederate memorialization and the demonization of Reconstruction, and the founding of the Alfalfa Club in 1913 fits right in to that timeline.

- There is a case to be made that any board of a university that signed an agreement that required paying a fee has breached their fiduciary duty and I think somebody should explore it

- I think it is OUTRAGEOUS that people are LEAPING to the conclusion that some our post prominent Americans are child rapists when it is EQUALLY PLAUSIBLE that they are simply indifferent to whether other people are child rapists so long as those other people can offer them access to power.

- Many years ago, a very fine historian (who probably does not remember this at all) told me: “this is a highly reputational business. I cannot afford to be associated with bullshit other than my own.” Though not intended to be, it is the single best piece of professional advice I have ever received.
