America has wanted Greenland and Iceland since 1867. it want powerful enough to do so until 1945. In 1947 it refused to leave Greenland and basically forced the treaty on the Danes. There was serious consideration to annexing it based on a 1941 occupation agreement signed by the free Danes in WW2.
