- Reposted by Tudor TimesPrepare for your mind to be blown. The oak trees that make up the Undercroft were felled in 1358. Their size and scale would suggest that they were at least 250 years old. Which means they were saplings only 40 years after the Norman Conquest in 1066. Mind. Blown. 🤯

- #OTD 1580 Henrique I of Portugal died. The 5th son of Manuel I and Maria of Aragon, he had not expected to become king and became a cardinal. Inheriting in 1578. In order to sire an heir, Henrique sought to leave the church, but was prohibited by the Pope, possibly at the instigation of Philip II.

- #OTD 1536 Katharine of Aragon bit.ly/1Wj6HMS was buried in Peterborough Cathedral. A black marble & gold monument was raised (gone now) presumably far less grand than the one that Henry had planned to share with her when he commissioned a tomb for them @westminsterabbey.bsky.social in 1518.

This jaw-dropping detail comes from “The Nymph” (La Ninfa) by Italian sculptor Giovanni Battista Lombardi (1823–1880) where solid stone is carved to mimic water rippling around her bare feet. The full sculpture was executed in 1858 for Palazzo Facchi in Brescia.

- #OTD 1526, François I of France & Emperor Charles V signed the Treaty of Madrid agreeing that F. would marry C's sister Eleonor, the widowed Queen of Portugal. François claimed later it was done under duress after his capture at the Battle of Pavia. Eleonor by Joos Van Cleeve.
