- Everyone in TB talks about “nutrition matters.” But what happens when you actually ask households with TB what kind of nutritional support works for them? We did exactly that through the TB LENS qualitative study in South India. tinyurl.com/mr42k9k8
- TB LENS is nested within TB LION, which provided full daily nutritional requirements (rice, pulses, groundnuts, oil + multivitamins) to undernourished household contacts for six months. 2600 Kcal daily 82g of protein We interviewed HHCs, health workers, and nutritionists about the experience.
- The verdict? People loved the intervention. Participants reported: • weight gain • more energy • better mobility • fewer skipped meals • less financial stress

We think this is an underestimate, & as much as 28% of TB could be attributable to undernutrition – see our latest comment here: www.thelancet.com/journals/lan...

- The House just proposed slashing NIH funding by more than a third. I wrote about what this means—not just for science, but for America’s health, economy, and future. 🧵👇 ps7uy.substack.com/p/we-lead-th...
- 1/ The House just proposed slashing NIH funding from $42B to $27.5B. A cut this deep wouldn’t just hurt—it would uproot American biomedical innovation. As a physician-scientist whose career depends on NIH funding, I can tell you: The panic is real.
- 2/ The NIH isn’t some bloated bureaucracy. It’s the engine of American discovery. Founded in 1930, it’s supported nearly a century of breakthroughs—from chemotherapy to mRNA vaccines.

- We know that undernourished persons with TB are at higher risk of mortality, but why? My incredible mentee Dr. Alexa Tabackman tries to understand why in this new paper: tinyurl.com/2jc76v8c A thread 🧵 @buceid.bsky.social @bostonmedical.bsky.social @madhupai.bsky.social @meganmurray.bsky.social
- 2/10) We conducted a multicenter prospective cohort analysis with 1587 pulmonary TB patients from 5 diverse sites across India (2015-2019). Our primary exposure was premorbid BMI <17 kg/m² (moderate-severe undernutrition). @theunion.org @richardwhite321.bsky.social @who.int
- (3/10) Why focus on premorbid BMI? Weight loss commonly occurs due to TB itself. Evaluating BMI before symptom onset helps clarify the true role of undernutrition in driving disease severity.

- Reposted by Pranay SinhaI get why this view is attractive to people—it gives them a false sense of control. But in reality, we can’t really control whether we get MS, cancer, etc. Even non-smokers get lung cancer. People who do not have obesity get diabetes. Better to seek evidence-based treatments than live in delusion.
- Reposted by Pranay SinhaTo be clear, if this bill passes, it will end all scientific research & medical training in the US. It will close hospitals. It will be economically devastating. Millions will lose their jobs. Call your representatives & tell them to vote fuck no on 15% IDC rates & the rest of this horror show.
- Reposted by Pranay SinhaThere’s no amount of diet and exercise that will prevent things like cancer and autoimmune diseases. Obviously the choices we make do matter to some extent, but wellness influencers are selling is an illusion of control that’s maliciously deceptive and harmful.
