- Reposted by Suzette SmithHere at the Mercury we love an action film director who’s secretly so much better than anyone asked him to be. On Friday, Ric Roman Waugh’s Shelter hits theaters with a nearly wordless guy (Jason Statham) forced to return to a secret, violent vocation.
- Someone recently signed me up for a “PDXtoday” newsletter which seems to be written by AI (or someone with terrible taste) in South Carolina.

- Reposted by Suzette SmithWhen @opb.org ended Hush, even Harvard's Nieman Storyboard could see how short-sighted that was. After making four successful podcasts together, @ryanjhaas.bsky.social and I are committed to continuing our investigative work in the Northwest, and we're launching our own publication. More soon.

- Reposted by Suzette Smith🚨HOLY CRAP. An ICE whistleblower just revealed a secret memo authorizing ICE officers to break into homes without a judicial warrant, which DHS's own legal training materials say is unconstitutional! ICE then hid the memo from the public, passing it along by word of mouth and private conversation.

- Reposted by Suzette SmithI reviewed Bi Gan's RESURRECTION for the Mercury... Portland, you have very few chances to see this in theaters this weekend. My recommendation? You should.
- I was happy to catch this inflatable unicorn waggle at ICE protests this fall—and pretty chuffed that readers also seemed to love it.
- On the off chance you're New Year's Day-ing at the movies, consider this great recommendation / review from @sinacolad.bsky.social of Bi Gan’s 'Resurrection.' Portlanders be warned; it's a pretty limited engagement for this sci-fi existential banger.

- I am comfortable with one critic panning Marty Supreme and another putting it on his Top 10 Movies of 2025 list. The purpose of art is to discuss art. Even more good news: @sinacolad.bsky.social's two favorite movies this year haven't even come out yet.
- Don't have time to write a think piece on how much of human cognition is memorizing and reciting phrases one has heard before. I'm just going to be mean and say if you're not trying to understand and communicate you're basically a chatbot.
- The holidays are such a brutal war between people who have time to celebrate them and people who do not.
