- Carver literally saved agriculture in the South. Cotton is hugely draining in terms of nutrients, decades of monoculture left the soil depleted and barren, and eroding away, to the point that Georgia now has its own "Little Grand Canyon". It's gorgeous, but it was caused by the cotton industry
