- These results can help us better understand the potential role of citizens as a ‘democratic safeguard’ against democratic backsliding: citizens may tolerate democratic backsliding precisely because the principles undermined in these processes are not the ones they value most.

- Through a conjoint experiment in 7 countries, we show that while citizens are strongly committed to free elections, they are more willing to trade off other liberal democratic principles (like media freedom or judicial independence) for higher incomes — especially when these are eroded gradually.
