While the original Timber Wolf OmniMech was developed by Clan Wolf, its battlefield prowess earned it a reputation as a near-ideal war machine amongst both the other Clans and the Inner Sphere. As Clan Sea Fox shifted more and more towards their role as merchants and arms dealers, they decided to capitalize on the Timber Wolf's reputation with the introduction of the Mad Cat Mk II.

Some thoughts on how scoring of Southern Assault works #BattleTech
Tournament Scoring

In my post and video about Southern Assault 2025, I talked a bit about being disappointed with apparent unevenness in the paint scoring. I don't think my own paint score reflected what my miniatures should have gotten on the published rubric, and I know a few other people in similar situations. In some conversations sparked by that, I've seen some players advocate for removing paint scores from the tournament's scores altogether with a painting competition as a separate event.

A look at the SKW-4G variant of the Shockwave for patrons #BattleTech

The SKW-4G was the first variant for the Shockwave SKW-2F. Earthwerks-FWL introduced it just one year after the initial production model, but its adoption was slow due to the experimental laser technology that it used. The Shockwave SKW-2F entered production at Earthwerks-FWL in the Marik-Stewart Commonwealth just a couple of years after the end of the Word of Blake Jihad. While many of the Shockwaves produced bolstered the military of the newly independent Marik-Stewart Commonwealth, it was also offered on the open market in order to bolster the regional economy as militaries across the Inner Sphere rushed to rebuild after the destruction of the previous decade.

Southern Assault 2025

I had a good time at Southern Assault 2025 last month. This year it had expanded from a two-day Alpha Strike tournament to a four-day mini convention with the Alpha Strike tournament, a BattleTech tournament, and more. I originally planned to play in both the Alpha Strike and BattleTech tournaments, but a conflict with work meant that I'd only be able to do the Alpha Strike tournament this year.

I'm off to Southern Assault this weekend #BattleTech #AlphaStrike
Off to Southern Assault

This weekend I'll be heading to Clemmons, North Carolina for Southern Assault 2025. I'll be playing in the Alpha Strike tournament, but due to a work trip, I won't be able to stick around for Monday's BattleTech tournament. When I first started thinking about my list for the tournament, I had an idea for a theme: MechCommander. It is one of my favorite computer game representations of BattleTech, and I played it a ton back when it came out.

A look at the color-coded dice used for Leviathans: the Great War #Leviathans
Dice in Leviathans

Leviathans: The Great War makes use of custom dice. These dice are all dodecahedrons (twelve-sided polyhedrals), but their faces are each numbered differently. In order to tell them apart, they are color-coded. They range from a dGreen (1-4) up through a dBlack (1-12). The dice approximate a standard set of polyhedral dice, but, because 12 doesn't divide cleanly by 8 or 10, they are not exactly the same as normal polyhedral dice.

Produced on Donegal after Clan Wolf-in-Exile's retreat from Arc Royal, the Sojourner's production runs are split between the Clan and the Lyran Commonwealth. Where the other designs produced as part of that arrangement have long been staples among Clan Wolf-in-Exile forces, the Sojourner is being produced for the first time. It was designed to be rugged and dependable in a time of chaos and change.

I made a fleet building site for Leviathans: The Great War #Leviathans
Leviathans Fleet Builder

I received my pledge for the Leviathans: The Great War Kickstarter campaign earlier this month and have been digging into it. I got a lot of stuff in my pledge. Thankfully, the miniatures are all pre-painted, so they are ready to play out-of-the-box. I've gotten a few small games in with Stef and Lexi at this point, and have been having fun learning the rules and trying out different ships.

The Sojourner entered production after Clan Jade Falcon defeated the Kell Hounds and Clan Wolf-in-Exile on Arc Royal. The survivors of Clan Wolf-in-Exile relocated to Donegal and launched an effort to rebuild their forces. In addition to building as many of their existing designs as possible, the exiled Wolves also began to manufacture the Sojourner. Thanks to the partnership between Clan Wolf-in-Exile and the Lyran Commonwealth, they shared the output of the Sojourner production line.

I organized a local league to play through Hot Spots: Hinterlands over the past several months #BattleTech

Hot Spots: Hinterlands is set up to support multiple players with mercenary units playing against each other. At the beginning of the year, I decided to embrace this and run a league for a group of us to play through the book. My daughter and I played through another mercenaries contract as the fighting on Zhongshan continued. #BattleTech

ComStar's program to replicate Clan OmniMechs produced an Inner Sphere version of the Battle Cobra. Its A configuration is designed for electric warfare and hitting things with medium lasers. #BattleTech
’Mech Manual: Battle Cobra BTL-C-2OA

I took one of these to the Atomic Empire Classic BattleTech tournament and killed a Tenshi with it! Sure, it had some help and the kill was mostly luck, but I still had lots of fun with this ’Mech. Like other powers of the Inner Sphere, ComStar tasked their scientists and engineers with replicating Clan OmniMech technology. With numerous Battle Cobras taken as salvage from the Devil's Bath on Tukayyid, they decided to try to replicate that design.

The Pouncer H is a hard-hitting 'Mech thanks to heavy lasers and Streak SRMs #BattleTech

After the invention and proliferation of heavy lasers, many Clan OmniMechs received standard configurations making use of the new weapons. For the Pouncer, the new H configuration was inspired by the existing D configuration with its triple ER medium lasers in each arm replaced by a pair of heavy medium lasers. Clans Wolf and Wolf-in-Exile are the primary users of the Pouncer, but it is not an exclusive design.

Lost Island of the Pirate Queen is an adventure series for the Fantasy Age roleplaying game. It contains five adventures that will take heroes from 1st level to 11th level. I went to Motor City Mayhem last month and had a lot of fun #BattleTech #AlphaStrike
Motor City Mayhem 2025

Last month, I took a trip up to Michigan to visit family and play in Motor City Mayhem 2025. It is an annual Alpha Strike tournament run by the Motor City MechWarriors. Here's the list that I took and an overview of my games there. My List This year, Motor City Mayhem was locked to the Jihad era. I decided to bring a Clan Nova Cat force because they have my favorite paint job out of all of my painted factions.

We wanted to be more accessible by showcasing paint jobs by a wider skill range, and to put more effort into helping others replicate the posted minis.

A look at how a unit's Battle Value is calculated #BattleTech
What Is Battle Value?

In the early days, games of BattleTech were balanced by either gut feeling or the total tonnage of forces. The Tactical Handbook introduced Combat Value as a numerical representation of how much units could contribute to a battle. Maximum Tech replaced Combat Value with Battle Value. It was the same general idea, but with a new name and new formulas. Over the years since then, the Battle Value system has been refined with a larger set of changes happening in 2007's TechManual, that are sometimes referred to as BV2 by fans, and some smaller changes since then.

Designed during the final days of the Star League, the Dragon Fire was first built during the technical renaissance of the 3050s. Then the manufacturer was taken over by the Word of Blake, and the design's popularity plummeted after their war against the entire Inner Sphere. During the chaos of the Dark Age, General Motors in the Federated Suns picked up the design and began to manufacture a new variant.

’Mech Manual: Dragon Fire DGR-7K

The Dragon Fire is a design that has been abandoned twice. It was designed near the end of the Star League, but it never made it into production. Then it was first built during the late 3050s and proved popular throughout the Federated Commonwealth and Draconis Combine. Then its manufacturer sided with the Word of Blake during the Jihad. In the aftermath, existing models continued to serve the militaries of the Inner Sphere but it had lost much of its luster.

I finished painting a batch of miniatures this afternoon. Clan Wolf got a Pouncer, a Dire Wolf, and a Timber Wolf TC. The Federated Commonwealth got a Wolfhound. Then I started a merc unit for the Hinterlands with a Trebuchet and a Centurion. #BattleTech #MechWarrior #AlphaStrike
