- Reposted by Scottish Geology TrustAs it's Burns Night, here's CM Hardie's 1893 painting, The Meeting of Robert Burns and Walter Scott which took place in Edinburgh in the winter of 1786-87. But who's the seated man on the right, pressing his fingertips together? It's geologist James Hutton who'll be 300 years old in June this year.

- Reposted by Scottish Geology TrustFor #MineralMonday, the vanishingly rare and delightfully named* clinojimthomsponite. A very weird triple-chain silicate from Achmelvich, Sutherland. *named for James Thompson, but there was already a thomsonite, so they called it jimthompsonite, and this is the monoclinic polymorph
- We did it! We are going to build the Deep Time Trail at Siccar Point! 🥳 Thank you so much to everyone who donated, and everyone who supported the campaign by sharing it. We couldn’t be doing this without you. We raised a whopping £61,488 on the Crowdfunder platform 🧵⬇️
- When we add in gift-aid and direct donations, we have raised over £86,500, not including an additional £72k from a community fund. The overall budget and design plans are currently being finalised, but we already know that we have raised enough money to fulfil our vision!
- ➡️ So what happens next? ⬅️ The campaign is officially over, but this project is staying open, meaning we can continue to receive donations - we just can’t offer rewards. www.crowdfunder.co.uk/p/siccar-point We’ll be in touch with updates as the project progresses.

- Reposted by Scottish Geology TrustSiccar Point is a touchstone in the evolution of geological thinking: the spot where a human mind first reeled at the depths of geologic time. Visiting it was profound, connecting across the centuries with James Hutton and John Playfair, who connected across the eons with the age of the Earth. ⚒️
