Over the past century, the Ocean has absorbed approximately one-third of anthropogenic carbon dioxide emissions. This vital carbon sequestration function, combined with its role as a heat reservoir, places marine systems at the heart of global climate dynamics.

This collaborative effort advances our understanding of ocean carbon cycling and ecosystem resilience across scales—from animal guts to a global ocean—through integrated observations, modeling, and platform development. OBVI connects 60+ researchers across 11 countries through five major projects.
