- A moment of synchronicity, as this week I finally steeled myself to read Behrouz Boochani's No Friend But the Mountains, contemplating the last time this country bipartisanly chose to endorse cruelty towards people who'd nothing except exist in the wrong time, in the wrong place, in the wrong skin.
- I've had so many battles over the years trying to persuade authors not to refer to women or girls as 'females', but now all I have to say is 'It's giving Andrew Tate'. So I'm grateful to him for that, I guess.

- Never forget that in Ita Buttrose's first biography she wrote that she thought 'multiculturalism has gone too far' and felt as if she was supposed to be 'ashamed of being white'. She learned not to say that kind of thing out loud in following years, but I doubt her position has changed.

- I keep thinking about something Melissa Febos said in one of her essays, about 'art monsters', that there is always a corresponding weakness in the work. I think she might be right about that.
- Speculative fiction isn't really my thing but I did go through a phase of reading Gaiman a few years ago, and while he's an engaging storyteller with a good ear for language, far too many of his women are characterised as 'sluts who deserve to die' for my liking.
- A massive failure of imagination in someone who otherwise has quite a lot of it.
