I understand why US counterinsurgency strategy failed now that I'm the target. They don't even begin to understand the mental space of the people they're trying to control.
And these are people who speak my language and in theory could easily understand my cultural context.
I can't even imagine how much bigger that gulf of understanding was when dealing with populations in distant Asian countries.
