- Reposted by rainey reitman👂 Can I share a personal note? I’ve worked in press freedom for nearly a decade, at two of the leading organizations in the field. For years, staying in the office until late meant helping coordinate emergency campaigns to free journalists jailed in Egypt, Ethiopia, Russia, or other places.
- Reposted by rainey reitmanThe murders of Alex Pretti and Renee Good in Minnesota once again show the power of cellphone footage in combating official lies. Recording police or ICE agents is an act of journalism, no matter who does it.
- Reposted by rainey reitmanDuring WWII, the U.S. government forcibly took over 100,000 people of Japanese ancestry from their homes and held them in internment camps. Fred Korematsu was arrested and convicted for defying the government’s order and refusing to go to the camps.
- Huge props to the incredible staff at civil liberties organizations across the country working today (and probably all weekend) to defend your right to protest. No day off for democracy. We fight in the streets and online.
- An article about this political moment, the role of journalism, and the very real dangers of state repression—told as a cheeky guide to buying a gas mask. I’ve been sending it to everyone; it both delights and horrifies me. Well done @sarahjeong.bsky.social www.theverge.com/policy/86857...

- Senator Wyden is such a breath of fresh air in what can seem like a broken political system. I start to lose hope about the world and then I remember that somewhere out there, @wyden.senate.gov actually understands what's going on, gets technology, and is trying to do some good in the world.

If MS can easily produce this to law enforcement, then anyone who compromises their cloud infrastructure (and customer service infrastructure, or can forge a plausible LE request) can potentially access that data.

- Reposted by rainey reitmanIn case you’re wondering whether the pro-ICE reactions to Renee Nicole Good’s murder are natural, here’s a comment that was just left on my video. My video about anti-transgender bias at the BBC. I haven’t made a video about Good yet. youtu.be/pWm3dK8tPto

- Reposted by rainey reitmanThe Kids Online Safety Act (KOSA) would force social media platforms to filter and suppress content that the Trump admin is willing to argue makes kids "depressed" or "anxious." Videos of ICE murdering people make me pretty depressed and anxious, and I'm a grown ass adult. See where this is going?

- Another reason to appreciate investigative reporters: It takes substantial time for reporters to investigate and verify leaked documents. There are countless hours dedicated not only to the stories that get published but to the ones that are discarded because the leaks can’t be verified.
- The author of a viral Reddit thread alleging fraud at a food delivery company tried to back up his claim by sending me AI-generated documents. Today I'm publishing those documents in the hopes that it helps other reporter see what we're up against in the age of AI www.platformer.news/fake-uber-ea...

- This. It comes down to whether we want the government policing ideas, and yeah… we don’t. Hateful speech should be met with denouncement, mockery, facts, or just ignoring it. But handing the government the power to silence speech it disagrees with is not only unconstitutional, it’s a bad idea.
