- This looks a bit like burnout on John’s end but as a developer I feel the same sometimes. The games I don’t want to make are the ones I should be making to stay afloat. The only other option is that I don’t have the talent to make the kind of games I want to which is a harder pill to swallow.

- It’s sad. The way I operate currently is a direct response to that job. I quit when they told me working on Ends Reach violated my non-compete lol
- I hear you on free-to-play stuff. I play almost no free-to-play titles (major one recently was The Finals, which I think handles things reasonably). In the case of survival crafting games, curious what dark patterns you see. To me, they just give people an engaging loop with results, a la Minecraft.
- I worked in mobile-f2p for a few years and the way we discussed our customers made me physically ill. I actually think I’ve taken a much harsher stance on game design and business practises since then.. Something like Valheim is certainly much less cynical than that.

- Curious, why do you think that? I think I could show your game to a lot of people I know and even those who aren't interested in it wouldn't call it slop. Game dev and discoverability are bloody hard. No doubt about it and I don't envy the challenges many devs have. But it's not impossible.
- My game is just not presentable in a great way. Tens of thousands of people have seen it, making it something they don’t regret trying is the harder part.

- I don’t blame you, hopefully you’re able to pull yourself out. I know mine has been up and down this year as well. I relate only because I spend so long on each project just to dump it into the gutters of steam. Life is catching up to me.
- I don't blame anyone for being disillusioned or for feeling like gaming's moving on without them. I just find John tends to have a lot of meltdowns and for someone in the privileged position to be working in what's left of the games press, it seems a bit myopic to me.
- Yeah I assume it’s a burnout
- Yeah, I get your point there. Many games want to look like other games to capitalize on familiarity. Also, I think a lot of them are using storebought assets, either entirely or as a base. The number of easy(er) tools for game dev unfortunately means a lot more low-effort slop too.
- for 95% of people who buy games, my stuff is already slop. I drive a truck for work now and don’t have nearly the financial runway I did when I started, not sure I can continue on the same path. I haven’t had a job writing code in 3 years, just feels like quittin time soon.
- I think Minecraft is what created such a large audience for those kinds of games. But it also seems like he's melting down because he's getting older and the world's moving on. I don't like these kinds of games either, but there's still a ton I want to play out there and well, times do change.
- It’s not about this game in particular, I actually like Valheim, it’s more about just in general the visual and gameplay trends even in indie are starting to homogenize in a way I’ve fallen off of

- One of the best known demoscene productions, Future Crew's Second Reality made state-of-the-art PCs of the days sweat. Now this lad lad has it running like butter in JavaScript in a browser. Incredible work! Highly recommend giving this a watch.

- So #GOG is lying to you about their use AI. They've now been caught using AI images at least twice recently, with a possible 3rd coming in their patron cancellation survey. 'WIP' that was never removed? How about the last use of AI? Was that WIP too? Let's dig...
- Upon the calling out of a recent sales image and subsequent confirmation it was AI, Patrons (are their funds used to fund AI?) have been cancelling their subscription only to be met with a seemingly Gemini AI image -

- Happy Birthday Duke Nukem 3D! 30 years ago (29 Jan 1996), I uploaded Duke3D v1.0 shareware to Software Creations, and a legend was unleashed on the world. This pic is George Broussard pointing to said upload happening. Was a super fun game to work on - lots of happy memories. #AlwaysBetonDuke
