- being taught about symbolism and metaphor in such a way that a story is a series/network of A mapping onto B in such a way that the whole distills out into a concrete thesis or argument about the world is, pretty brutal in terms of flattening out what a story can do and how they are produced.

- I was thinking about this in relation to the "artists assistant." Recently at a museum i was taken by some monumental paintings, juxtaposing very simple shapes, impressed with how clean and even everything is. The exhibition catalog offhandedly mentions, all of the cleaning up? An assistant!
- When i talk to my mom about art she will talk about how abstract expressionism is misogynistic and she especially hates Ad Reinhardt so i feel a strong kind of uncomfortable gender self-consciousness about enjoying/making "macho" art like painting.
- I saw an antiques roadshow clip the other day where a woman brings in a plate she had hanging over her stove for years with a goofy smile on it, and the appraiser is like "its a madoura picasso ceramic, its worth ten thousand britmerican poundollars." And the whole time the plate is like yaaay :-D
