Many moons ago, I helped drill ice cores and do radar surveys of the ice sheets in Greenland.
80% of the landmass is ice.
Unfathomable, inhospitable, stunning emptiness.
Cold, hash and unforgiving nature. Everything was hard.
And that was in the summer.

I guess that once they had longer range of aircraft and Project Iceworm was a bust, the need declined from there
