- Jan 6 hero Harry Dunn aka @libradunn1.bsky.social is running for Congress. Harry told me on the phone last night he was motivated to run after seeing Alex Pretti being gunned down in Minneapolis. Here’s Harry’s inspiring campaign launch video: youtu.be/KzUVfHPUVvw
- The Wayback is now so load-bearing we should be protecting it with our actual lives
- If you can't stand up for a fellow journalist when she's being ridiculously bullied and demeaned for asking a basic question of a public leader, you sure as hell aren't going stand up for anything as abstract as a national principle or ethos. American journalism is dying. And with it, our republic.

- The CIA just stopped publishing their World Factbook and took every page, including the archived copies of previous versions! This sucks. It was public domain, so I recovered the 2020 edition (the last one published as a zip file) and shared it to GitHub simonwillison.net/2026/Feb/5/t...
- One more comment on the Post debacle: this hurts journalism broadly. Good journalists will go do something else. The rest will be fighting for fewer jobs and everyone will earn less. Fewer people will take up the career. The damage done is to the ecosystem, as well as the paper.
- This week we learned that Fizzy, our 11-year-old beagle/shepherd mix, has a second cancerous lesion (soft-tissue sarcoma, we think) on her leg. It's the second time she's had such a thing, and we're optimistic about surgery and treatment. But please send vibes, anyway. We love her a bunch. <3
- Mom’s 80th birthday festivities. A good day but boy am I tired—& so are my folks. Mom’s best friend from California flew up to surprise her. You only turn 80 once & no one knows what tomorrow will bring; I’m glad my mom could make the most of hers. Also, Dad is doing great after yesterday’s spill.

- I don't say this often but: I'm so proud to be a climate and environment reporter. We cover an issue that is vitally important to humanity and the natural world. 14 of my climate colleagues at the Post were laid off today and I'm devastated. www.climatecoloredgoggles.com/p/washington...

- Money can buy happiness. If Elon Musk built a rocket and shot himself into the fucking sun that would generate massive happiness.
- Local news FTW. The Upper Rogue Independent is on line! Banner says it’s for residents of Shady Cove, Trail, Prospect, Eagle Point, Butte Falls and White City, OR, but really, I think we can all celebrate and enjoy. Congratulations, @crawlieswithcri.bsky.social!!

- I know the clips are out there but I'm going to watch Trump's NBC interview with Tom Llamas and thread some thoughts here. It's rare that Trump talks at length with mainstream outlets so I want to see how it went myself. (1/x)
- it has gotten overlooked, but Trump's new talking point that crime is down in Minneapolis because of him is preposterous. As of the end of last month his goons have committed the majority of 2026 murders in the city!
- Jeff Bezos’s wealth has increased an average of $70 million every day of 2026, meaning that he could have offset The Post’s losses with what he’s made since Monday.
- ICE investigators were supposed to investigate the killing of Alex Pretti. Instead, they investigated Alex. Not his killers. With FBI now leading this probe, I’m calling on Kristi Noem and Kash Patel: Remove all ICE agents from this investigation completely.

- Imagine buying a social media network for a vastly overinflated price, absolutely wrecking it with nazis and AI porn, changing the algos so everyone has to see your posts, and then posting about how sad you are. Priceless.

- Breaking Reuters: A team working for Tulsi Gabbard last spring led an investigation into Puerto Rico's voting machines. The goal was to work with the FBI to investigate claims that Venezuela had hacked voting machines in Puerto Rico. The probe did not produce any clear evidence of interference.
- Would be comical if it weren't so sinister. What happens if they grab voting machines in 2026 before the results are official?

- In November 2020, the (dumb, baseless) theory was that this involved Smartmatic. It’s useful to reiterate that no matter what lies the incessantly lying Gabbard offers, there’s no evidence that there was anything suspect about the election AT ALL, much less Involving some conspiracy linked to VZ.
