- I refuse to accept the labelling of science as ‘left-wing’. Not only because I think this is largely aimed at discrediting facts as opinions, but also -for any insider- it’s so untrue. The echelons of science are too traditional, hierarchical & club-based to qualify for any sort of progressive left.

- It’s very painful to see the mainstreaming of truth-telling as division-stirring. The line of questioning is so horrendous I could hardly bear to finish watching this short clip but I’m glad I did manage to get to Zack’s sharp answer.
- 1/ This pause is obviously concerning to researchers & universities & I’d like to specifically register the point that if the reason of ‘aligning with national priorities’ means more policy-driven & less free ideas-driven research then this move is of even more concern. www.msn.com/en-in/politi...
- Lots to unpack in this episode with @krishgm.bsky.social interviewing @mehdirhasan.bsky.social but I’d particularly like to commend Mehdi for plainly pointing out the more prevalent institutional racism in the UK as apposed to the US, even during these dark times. open.spotify.com/episode/31fk...

- How to change the world from your little place in it? *** Speak about your passions a little. Do what you’re scared of a little. Challenge your tribe a little. Pause before you react a little. Believe that everyone is struggling a little. Spread hope a little. Love yourself at least a little.

- ‘Self-report’ is mindlessly stigmatised in quantitative health research in the pursuit of ‘objectivity’ so I wrote a piece reflecting on our need to do better. Interested to hear your views about this too. journals.plos.org/globalpublic...

- Ah the good old pitching public health against ‘individual freedom’. Deadcatting who’s actually the biggest threat to America’s freedoms.

- The Mark Carney speech at Davos is a remarkable admission that the ‘club’ rules that have always been grossly unfair on those outside it are not working anymore to the advantage of many of its members. Hard to disagree but the solution is not a new club.

- In case it needs to be said: GenAI is not ‘free speech’. It’s technology that needs regulation like any other. Also in case it needs to be said: scientific tools can be used for evil. Science itself is neutral but it can be applied immorally. We knew all of that before we stopped thinking!
- Let’s hope this is the final exodus wave from the horrendous site. Welcome, perseverers. Here is better!
- According to this FT article, Sir Paul Nurse says: “I’m afraid there’s many bad people around, but they have made scientific advances.” The ‘but’ in this quote says it all… So don’t blame us when we lose faith in institutions that regard integrity as irrelevant to designating scientific greatness.

- Reposted by Prof Nisreen AlwanYes, JD. Let’s ask them if they think a stay at home mom, avowed Christian, and widow of a veteran deserved to be shot in the face and left to bleed out in her own car after dropping her 6-year-old off at school, for the crime of looking out for her neighbors. Let’s ask everyone running for office.

- Unless you’re in a totally ‘safe’ environment, as a woman in leadership you can’t afford to display an ignorant, oblivious or even a ‘not sure’ attitude. It gets interpreted as incompetence rather than cute humility which is the common interpretation if a male leader does that. Am I right?
