Sad to hear of the passing of Dr. Denise Park, Center for Longevity, UT Dallas.
Denise’s work on dedifferentiation, #memory & #cogaging were very important to the way many of us approach our research today.
May she rest in peace 💐

Does our "semantic space" get stuck in the past as we age?
New work by @ellscain.bsky.social uses historical embeddings + behavioral data to show we are truly lifelong learners.
Older adults don't rely on historical meanings—they update them to match current language! 🧠✨

New paper w/ @ryskin.bsky.social in Open Mind!
Words change: “broadcast” once meant scattering seeds; “tweet” was just a bird sound. Do older adults keep earlier meanings, or update as language evolves?
Our new paper investigates how semantic representations differ across age groups. 🧵👇

We are hiring!
Department of Psychology at the University at Buffalo is recruiting for a SUNY Empire Innovation faculty hire at the rank of Associate or Full Professor. The hire is focused on the study of human cognition and behavior to address gaps in learning, development, or education using AI.
New paper! This was a passion project for me. As first gen who received no career counseling, it took me a bit to find my through college & into the CSD field. When I taught our Intro course, I incorporated a lot of career counseling based on student feedback. Happy to put some data behind it!

Buffalo is a great place to work and live!
Check out our new paper on #phonological treatments for #anomia in #aphasia. Lots of good data to support phonological treatment but more work needed for maximizing treatment generalization, expanding outcome measures, and assessing treatment ingredients for patient matching.

"Women are PIs on 58% of the canceled grants, although they are PIs on only 34% of all active NSF grants.
Similarly, Blacks are PIs on 17% of the terminated grants, although they make only 4% of the total pool. Hispanic PIs and those with disabilities were twice as likely to lose a grant."
Another scoop from Jeff Mervis (@policyhound.bsky.social): NSF's ~1400 grant terminations have disproportionately affected PIs from groups underrepresented in science: women, racial & ethnic minorities, & those with disabilities. 1/3

Proud of Gabi and Peyton for their hardwork this semester providing Phonomotor Treatment to a person with aphasia as a part of a larger clinic-research partnership.
They gave a phenomenal poster presentation last week!
We’ve got some exciting news: OpenCSD and CSDisseminate are joining forces and becoming 1 working group! Our mission is still the same: to spread the word about #OpenScience in communication sciences and disorders. But now we’re doing it together.

📢 Today I was supposed to be in DC, highlighting what the NSF Social, Behavioral, & Economic Sciences delivers to US taxpayers. NSF had one of the highest returns on investment (ROIs) of federal grantors 👏🏻 (1) and NSF SBE funded 63% of US social and psychological science research (2). 🧵

This is what a lot of us have been worried about.
This allows for many civil service positions to replaced with political appointees. This could include NIH institute directors and even POs.
BUT THERE IS A COMMENT PERIOD...

Thanks to Evan Kidd, @mcxfrank.bsky.social & @asifamajid.bsky.social (Eds) for organizing the awesome *Open* Encyc. of Cog. Sci. and entrusting me with/ the honor of penning the entry on "Language" (in < 3500 words, so do see other entries for much, MUCH more!)

Unfortunately, the NSF grant that supports our work has been terminated. This is a setback, but our mission has not changed. We will continue to work hard on making cognitive science a more inclusive field. Stay tuned for upcoming events.

Does the mind degrade or become enriched as we grow old? To explain healthy aging effects, the evidence supports enrichment. Indeed, the evidence suggests changes in crystallized (enrichment) and fluid intelligence (slowing) share a common cause. psycnet.apa.org/record/2026-...
Any have leads on postdoc, faculty, research staff position for an amazing postdoc whose #NIH Diversity Supplement was terminated? They work at the nexus of #linguistics, #aphasia, and #multilingualism. Any tips appreciated!
Huge congrats to Peyton Tripp, MA student in Speech-Language Pathology at University at Buffalo, for receiving an #ASHFoundation Graduate Student Scholarship! 🎉
She's passionate about advancing #bilingual services for #Aphasia and is providing phonomotor treatment for one of our research studies

KEEP CALLING. PEEL OFF ALL DEM SENATORS YOU CAN.
☎️: (202) 224-3121
Tell them to vote NO on Cloture and NO on CR. Vote is pushed to after 1:15ish for now. Situation is fluid.
The only public YES votes are Schumer and Fetterman. They need 7-8 total. KEEP CALLING.
Call retiring Senators too!
Friendly reminder: if you are waiting on something from a US-based scientist/reviewer/editor, please realize that we're barely making it through each day putting out non-stop fires and trying not to collapse into tears. We're trying our best, but things will take longer right now. Give grace.
Good news 🎉 #MOHELA has processed by #NIH#LRP payment finally. No more daily account checks!
I almost missed it because they post-dated the payment to when it should have been processed in January. 👀 Check your account closely when getting ready to submit payment verification information.
Just an update on #NIH#LRP payment processing in case others are also waiting... Mohela is still pending on processing the student loan payment after 30 business days - typically done in ~1 week
Mohela recently changed their payment address, which may have been a part of the delay on their end.
Wondering if your study section cancelled? I update this sheet daily. As of today, 56/124 study sections that should have met since Jan 2, 2025 have "not met as scheduled." docs.google.com/spreadsheets...
Very proud of this latest paper, which shows that reading two unrelated words in a meaningful sentence will push these words closer in semantic space—an effect observed 5min, 20min, and 12 hrs after initial exposure.

A good summary and excellent set of questions to NIH and NSF leadership from Sens. Markey and Warren here - they ask for answers by 2/26, wonder if they'll get any?

ATTENTION (PLEASE SHARE)
If anyone has or knows of any positions that might be appropriate for the NIH staff members who were terminated, please post the information in this thread.
There are lots of talented and accomplished people who may be looking for new opportunities.
Executive wants to frame the NIH indirects cut as $4B in savings.
But given that NIH returns $2.5 on every $1 investment, this would actually cost US economy a net $6 BILLION (per year!). Not to mention the human costs of wrecking education and research sectors and the communities they serve.
The new NIH policy for indirect costs going forward is capped at 15%.
This is forever going to alter the science ecosystem, upending and destroying a number of programs at universities across the country.
