- Reposted by Nicolai GellwitzkiCarney and Macron's comments at Davos make clear that leaders are recognising what others have long suspected - that the international order's previously dominant myths have been shattered in recent years. The question is now - what will replace them? www.cambridge.org/core/journal...
- In light of current events, this seems an apt moment to revisit our article with @jeremymoulton.bsky.social "The New Age of Myth" in @iojournal.bsky.social. Do we now witness the rise of a political myth of a new age of empires? www.cambridge.org/core/journal... @uoypolitics.bsky.social
- The myths born of this age will underpin the institutions, ideas, and ideologies that shape the trajectory of the international order in the decades to come. The crucial question is therefore: what will the political myths of this brave new world be?
- As we argue in the article, the narrative of a "new age of empires" has clear eschatological dimensions, declaring the death of the Liberal International Order while simultaneously providing a cosmogenic foundation for the (re-)birth of imperialism. Its mythologem is reproduced in variants worldwide
-
View full threadThe mythic potential lies not in the veracity of the claim but in its elevation into a world-defining framework, one that grounds political imagination and action much like earlier myths of the Cold War or of liberal progress.
- 🚨 New Publication in International Organization! 🚨 Happy to share our latest paper with @jeremymoulton.bsky.social:“The New Age of Myth: Political Narratives and the Reconstitution of World Order”, part of SI #IOFoGG on the Future of Global Governance. doi.org/10.1017/S002... @iojournal.bsky.social
- Short take: Political myths—the sacred narratives that legitimise power—are at the heart of global order. After WWII, myths of democracy, peace & cooperation structured the liberal international order.
- Today’s world: Those myths are crumbling even as the institutions they supported endure. This creates a mythological vacuum, a space where new narratives must emerge to give legitimacy to global power structures.

- Fear is often seen as the key driver of securitisation, but what about hate? Examining both emotions together offers deeper insights into political (de)mobilisation and (de)legitimisation
- Labelling violence as "fear-driven" can depoliticise & justify it, while calling it "hate-driven" condemns & delegitimises it. These framings shape public discourse, policy, and state responses.
