Alexander, it seems, was too ambitious. The Scotland Street forge failed to displace Lancefield, and in 1861 he went bankrupt. He died in 1862.
The Scotland Street premises later fell into the hands of Lancefield, before they too were eclipsed by Beardmore's even mightier Parkhead Forge.
