Today's pick was from yesterday's marathon. Saved this one to talk about by itself.
Alien: Resurrection (1997)
A favorite midnight movie of mine. Not good, per se, but amazing. Alien-human hybrids, pervy scientists, Ron Pearlman is there. Sigourney Weaver crawls around on the ground.
Movie magic.
I love this movie, but it's so clear they had no idea what to do with it. There are so many great ideas, so many killer scenes, but there's really no through-line, and Ripley's Alien powers are underdeveloped.
Love the hybrid, love its death scene, love the fucked up mutant Queen, love the clone scene. This movie has more body horror than all the other Alien movies combined, which I adore.
Hell yeah, agree with everything you said.
It's also 90s as hell, which I find some charm in.
I think showing it as a moden Midnight Movie is a good place for it. Its just too full of actors, scenes and bits.
Nov 30, 2025 20:45There were a couple red flags, but in general this was a really entertaining movie, and a really good looking movie. It felt like a story you'd see in those Dark Horse comics of the era. Even used a plot point from one of the best of those. Nearly drowned Ron Pearlman though.
Honestly the biggest problem with the movie is that Whedon wrote the script and you can really, really feel it in a couple places (especially Perlman's dialog, though he mostly makes it work.)
Leland Order is an unsung great performance in that movie though, wish he was given more to work with
That is exactly what I was getting at. You could see signs of meta humor and banter associated with Whedon, but it was subtle and thus tolerable.
