do any physical therapists know why I get pain in my trapezius muscles (both sides) after walking or hiking?
My wife is a PT, and recommends seeing someone for actual treatment, but she says it could be due to a lack of endurance and strength in those muscles.
Hiking and walking are endurance sports, so if some of the muscles in the posterior chain are weakened it could be causing pain in the trapezius.
The trapezius isn’t the only postural muscle, so a weakness in any of your postural muscles could contribute to a systemic disfunction during an endurance sport or activity.
Also consider what you’re carrying, and how you’re carrying it. If your body is loaded with like a large backpack or if you’re walking a dog that frequently tugs on a leash that could contribute to the pain you’re experiencing.
TLDR: my wife recommends seeing someone still, but let me know if you have any other questions for her. :)
Thank you to both you and her!
The endurance piece of it stands out. I don't walk frequently, and my upper body mobility is poor. The posture exercise of putting my forearms vertical on a wall behind me is almost impossible
In short, I do believe those muscles are weak
