- Recently submitted a paper to iMetaOmics @imetascience.bsky.social which states to have fees waived at their website (onlinelibrary.wiley.com/journal/2996...), but after acceptence asks for fees. - After a mutation makes E. coli more resistant to cefotaxime, can it coexist with its less resistant ancestor? In collaboration (Philip Ruelens, Arjan de Visser, Eline de Ridder): with measurements of growth, detoxification, and death rates we can predict coexistence. doi.org/10.1128/mbio...
- I very much like the part that we were able to use a population dynamic model with only measured parameters and predict quite accurately at which antibiotic concentrations and cell densities the strains would coexist! This suggests that we were capturing the most important interactions in our model.
- The other nice thing is: these strains were only two mutations apart; mutations affecting the beta-lactamase TEM1. That means: costs for resistance only from TEM1 mutations are enough to sustain coexistence. For larger changes, such as with and without plasmids, coexistence was shown before.
- But now we show it in very similar strains, we wonder "How does this affect evolutionary paths?". For that you have to wait for the next article! Thanks to my co-authors and the reviewers, whose reviews have made us understand our data better and really improved our article: doi.org/10.1128/mbio...
