Sigh.
Yes, I know about the moderation choices Bluesky has been making regarding NCP/NCII.
Yes, I know about the massive flaws and potential for abuse that their decisions have.
Dec 2, 2025 18:19But- to be fair, they made an honest try at it, which is more than most platforms, and used literally the only org that is fighting this form of abuse using tech.
They're overthinking this, but I think the Bluesky team is under a microscope here, and so ofc they're overthinking it.
The sad truth is that you can't solve human problems with tech- and you can't always solve tech problems with humans. Nuance doesn't translate.
There's ways around this gap, but they're not easy to find a balance with. There's no single step solution for this.
cld u explain more what u mean by flaws/abuse? it seems like a good thing to me but i’ve been too busy as of late to rly dive deep into everything happening atm 😭 /genq
They've implemented an image hash filter which allows users to add images. It prevents upload of media deemed "private or intimate", but has no oversight or means to oversee what images are added to the filter. So it could censor legitimate content
It seems like a good idea at first glance- however, the filter could absolutely be used to prevent ANY content from being shared, whether it's an unflattering photo, a meme, or breaking news.
And while censorship is one concern- it's also very easy to mitigate the filter if you know it exists.
it's like putting up a single screen door along an entire countries wide open border- it's only going to get used by people who want to use doors, and it can be booby trapped to hurt those who use it legitimately.
