I moved to the suburbs early. It has some downsides but boy is it much more affordable
Any money saved moving to the suburbs is eaten up by having to buy a car.
Feb 5, 2026 15:45This just really isn't true in a lot of cases, especially since a lot of people still need a car in a lot of cities.
Even beyond that, very possible to live as a one car family in the suburbs for a lot of people.
I think a lot of people need a car, but a lot of people also think they need a car but don't actually need one.
We live in the Philly suburbs next to a light rail line and multiple bus stops.
To get to the now monthly doctors appointments in Philly, the options are either:
1. drive there in 30-35 minutes
2. 1.5-2 hours via public transit
It's no surprise even transit enthusiasts make the car choice.
