Martin McGavin
Prof in Microbiology and Immunology at University of Western Ontario. Studying Staph aureus and how it senses and responds to chemical signals from innate immunity.
- Take care of the planet, or it will take care of us.
- Happy to see our collaboration with @larocklab.com in print! Great work from @larocklab.com group to show that Staphopain A cysteine protease (ScpA) of S. aureus initiates pyroptosis in keratinocytes through proteolytic processing of Gasdermin A. www.nature.com/articles/s41...
- This is the double edged sword of virulence and innate immunity. @mcgavlab.bsky.social have shown that acidic pH and unsaturated fatty acid conditions encountered on skin induce S. aureus protease production pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/32868405/, including serine protease SspA

- recovered from human and bovine hosts, in CC5, CC8 and CC97. Adaptive resistance to antibiotics is well established, but here we see repeated emergence of strains with increased resistance to antimicrobial fatty acids that comprise an important aspect of innate immunity
