I got some pushback recently for posting that we’re winning, because—truly—that victory will come too late for many, and the suffering is enormous.
But enormous suffering has been ongoing for a long time. Mourning it is a life-long process.
And any trend towards its alleviation is freakin’ amazing.
I’m not an optimist. For years I’ve been grappling with what look like irreversible global trends towards catastrophe. MAGA 2.0’s victory and rapid assault on the little bits of good left in the US seemed to seal the deal.
But now? The whole new fascist wave is in question. There is reasonable hope.
Recognizing that the pendulum may be swinging back towards the good, and swinging hard because of enemies far too stupid to sustain their own cruel vision, doesn’t mean things are rosy today. Not tomorrow either.
But it no longer looks like it’s all downhill from here, and damn, that’s just great!!
Even when things are dark, practicing radical hope is crucial to keep fighting the darkness and giving light a chance.
It’s hard to do when the way through looks impossible. We need to celebrate every sign that hope is real, that victory is actually coming. It’s part of how we keep up the fight.
Feb 4, 2026 22:33It makes a lot of sense to feel very afraid, angry, sad, anguished at all the awful, cruel, unnecessary suffering. And posting those feelings can offer some community and relief.
But I try to care for my pain in private and avoid doomposting even when my gut yells “DOOM!”
Let’s try and win together!
