- It's little compared to all else today, but the shift to Oman is a diplomatic blow to Turkey. Turkey had worked with Egypt, Qatar, and Saudi Arabia to coordinate an Iran-US meeting in Istanbul. Short story is Turkey likes to mediate. Wish the Washington Post Middle East team could cover this.Feb 4, 2026 22:00
- yes agree. that said, for Iran Oman is mediator of choice. @hamidrezaaz.bsky.social has a terrific draft paper on this as part of a larger project i'm co-leading on MENA mediation (and yes, Turkey is included!).
- Oooh very interesting. I do think (shifting) regional dynamics play a big role here. Turkey has been interesting in how it navigates these shifts over the years while always trying to remain relevant on the world stage. I look forward to reading your and @hamidrezaaz.bsky.social's work!
