That’s what’s shocking about this result: As I read it, this was so bad that the judge not only sanctioned the lawyer, she struck what he had filed, resulting in a default judgment against the client. In other words, his client lost the case entirely because of his actions.
In my limited experience with litigation (so I would stand corrected if appropriate), that is really unusual for exactly the reasons you’re alluding to, that judges hesitate to punish the client with the kind of nuclear option for the behavior of the lawyer.
