- Caught mid-blink! How cool is that?! Did you know herons have a special see-through eyelid called a nictitating membrane? It protects their eyes while keeping their vision sharp! Nature’s coolest built-in goggles! #birds #photography #heron #nature #photo #eastcoastkinFeb 15, 2025 03:22
- Gorgeous shot — and fascinating factoid!
- Thanks Valerie!
- The Alt text does a fantastic job of conveying the beauty and detail in the picture. Bravo on both.
- I appreciate it, Hamster!
- Our local friend , Antonio.
- I love it! My wife named this game Herman 😂
- sharks have them too. you can see it slide across their eye as they open their mouth to bite - it’s a protective mechanism
- I’m learning so much from this photo!
- Pretty much all birds have them. If you photograph diving ducks, you can easily capture that by doing serial shots of them diving. They always put their googles on 😉
- I have quite a few diving duck species nearby, but I very seldom can get close to them
- Cats and dogs have them, too. 😺
- No kidding? I had no idea. I'm going to have to find my cat and look at their eyes
- Fun fact: so do we! It's vestigial, called the plica semilunaris, and is located by the tear duct. 🌠
- Seriously? I had no idea!
