- Had a chat with @gabriellakd.bsky.social about biography for her most excellent podcast.
- This quote is, in my experience, accurate.
- Brilliant advice that applies to nonfiction, too, I think.
- Thinking about literary “hype,” I shared some practical tips for writers publishing a first book. But the most important advice is this. garthgreenwell.substack.com/p/some-thoug...
- Reposted by Lance RichardsonI'll say more before too long, but for now: Thanks to anyone who has ever read and supported the Post's books coverage.
- Reposted by Lance RichardsonAbsolutely not trying to make the terrible news of the closure of Washington Post's Books coverage about me or anything, but I cannot stress how bad this is for books. The biggest divide between Big 5 and independent/nonprofit press books is not quality--it's the marketing spend.

- As somebody who loves books, who thinks they are miraculous treasures worth devoting one's life to, it is very depressing to have been born into the Era of the Ascendant Tech Sociopaths.
- Reposted by Lance RichardsonThe Post killing its Books section (one of the best around) is so fucking bleak
- This is so unspeakably depressing. The books section was, imo, the most consistently thoughtful of any major newspaper in America. Books were considered for merit and seriousness, not for what would be popular and splashy with readers (like a certain other section run out of New York).
- I'm so excited for this. Pre-order, people!

- Reposted by Lance RichardsonDon Lemon is not the only reporter who was arrested by federal agents overnight — local independent journalist Georgia Fort just went live on FB to say federal agents were also at her door to take her into custody over her protest coverage in Minneapolis.
- I begged you not to make me mad. I didn’t want to hit you, but you made me, unfortunately.
- Really great piece on Matthiessen (and my book) by @xlo.bsky.social for @lrb.co.uk. An honor to be read by the best.

- @jesawyer.bsky.social Pentiment is brilliant. Riveting from start to finish.
- A thoughtful piece by @sarahweinman.com about Elizabeth Short and the unscrupulous "true crime industrial complex" that has built up around the Black Dahlia case. Nice to hear a new book attempts to restore some of Short's humanity, but Sarah has what sounds to me like legitimate reservations.
- Reposted by Lance RichardsonExcited that the North American edition of LIFELINES went to the printers today! Publishing on April 14, it's available to pre-order from your favourite bookstores in Canada and the US now. So grateful for the generous quotes, incl from brilliant @ziyatong.bsky.social! bookshop.org/p/books/life...
- This conversation between @josephoneill.bsky.social and Dan Drake for NYRB is very good. Hope there is another in Jan '27.
- Reposted by Lance Richardsonfor the weekend crowd: I dug into a new podcast that pins a bunch of notorious murders on a long-dead Jewish man from San Diego. It's the ugliest true crime property in recent memory. [gift link] defector.com/michael-conn...

- A brilliant lecture by Edward Carey at Bennington, with a surprise guest appearance by Peter Matthiessen.
- Wrote a piece for the new issue of Orion.
- This makes me so angry I can barely express it. All for nothing. They blew up AWW 2026 for nothing.

- Sad days.
- Solidarity with Dr. Randa Abdel-Fattah.
- I'm off social media for the indefinite future, but popping up briefly to post this, because otherwise how will anybody know about it? Me and the brilliant Howard Norman at the Harvard Book Store on January 21, talking about Matthiessen. Free, no ticket required. Please come if you're in Boston.
- If you read a biography and have a different interpretation, or "minor quibbles" — and I mean minor — you should absolutely email the author it. They love that.

- My new years resolutions are to actually treat successes as successes, rather than as failures-in-disguise (not successful *enough*); and to lose ten pounds.
