There’s about to be a tidal wave of biblical scholars and theologians weighing in on this because it’s patently wrong. I’m neither of those, but my faith is strongly shaped by Matthew 25:31-46, and I am daily aghast at the pretzels people will turn themselves into to justify ignoring it.

This is my heritage, too.
I feel lucky that I was raised in this church, especially in the South where there are a lot of hateful Christian churches. It was a big part of my life before I left for college.
Here in the South, a lot of UMC churches have left to be more conservative. I suspect they’ll eventually be indistinguishable from the SBC.
The ones that left the UMC, that is.
