View full threadThe 2 meanings are antithetical, and afaik you're the only person to use cancel to mean "casts a pall," "take into account," "put in context" (all of which are intellectual) rather than, you know, to *cancel*, refuse to list, refuse to talk about, refuse to review (all of which are antiintellectual)
- E.g., I would refuse to hire Diddy to supervise anyone's musicmaking, 'cos he has a history of abusing employees; but I wouldn't say we shouldn't review him, list him, try to understand his music, and so on. (Of course we're not in position to harm or boost his career anyway.)

- And now I've lost the thread of what you're talking about. Cancellation is what some people in our social set do as a usually-but-not-always lazy pseudo-politics and conversation shutdown, and their doing this is part of context, sure; but the artist's behavior itself is not "cancellation"...
- In my initial reading I *thought* you meant that your knowledge of the artist's *behavior* was what changed the context. If that *is* what you mean, please don't use the word "cancellation" for *that*, if you want me to understand what you're saying.
