It's such a funny framing, because what does Jeff Bezos care if a thing he likes owning and thinks is cool loses a couple million dollars a year? It's like you or me going out to get a coffee instead of making it at home once a week.
Bezos isn't destroying the Washington Post because it isn't profitable. He's destroying the Washington Post because he's calculated that a robust free press threatens the ability of his class to warp society around their interests
He thought it would be easier to peddle soft influence than it ended up being. He didn't think so many editors and reporters would stick to their principles under threat of losing their jobs. He didn't think so many people would stop reading when they noticed the paper printing bullshit.
